I recently bought a set of the red Type-R carpet from Tom (MovIt-USA) and I would like to share my carpet replacement experience with all of you. I have a red 92 with ivory interior. I love the ivory interior and it was one of the things I looked for when I purchased my car a few years ago. In my opinion, ivory interior presents the exotic look. I know there are a few NSX’s with interior and many of you (including myself) find the original ivory carpets annoying since they have worn and faded over the years.

Prior to the purchase of Tom’s carpet set, I contacted a few Acura dealers to inquire about the NSX carpets. I learned that the carpet set costs about $1,000 - $1,200 and it takes 2-3 months to ship since it’s a zero-demand item. I didn’t want to wait that long so I took out all the carpets and deep cleaned them. Unfortunately, the result was not satisfactory. I was glad that Tom offered the molded carpet set recently and since the ivory color unavailable, I bought a black NSX-R set (I thought it might work). When the carpet set arrived, I was very disappointed (it wasn’t Tom’s fault). The color coordination between the interior ivory trims and the black carpets was way off. I immediately contacted Tom and requested a refund. Tom’s customer service was superb. Instead of simply honor the return, he took time to acquire new ivory color samples and assured me that he would find me a set that I will be satisfied with. He told me I will be taken care off no matter what. He asked that I give other samples a try and I am glad I did. Tom really wants to make all his customers happy. In our sales transaction, he offered excellent communication and stood by his promises. One week later, ivory samples showed up, but it wasn’t the Type-R type carpet.

I ended up getting a set of the red Type-R carpets. I figured if they don’t work out, I will just sell or give them to a buddy of mine who has been thinking about replacing his black interior carpets. When I received the red carpets, I was very pleased with the carpet color and texture. The carpet set was of great quality.

I wanted the local professional upholstery shop to do the install, but they quoted me $300-$500 for the job and the shop was also at least one week out for appointments. Furthermore, I have a lot of equipment wires/cables and I was afraid they might get damaged during the carpet install by someone unfamiliar with the car. I decided to take on the challenge myself. I worked slowly and over the Labor’s Day weekend to finish the project. The project is not very difficult, and I feel the members can do the install themselves. The painful part was reattaching the vents. I am not a handyman, and I got the replacement done! I need to thank KKT for sharing some information with his excellent carpet install, the tips were invaluable.

For those of you with ivory interior, especially if your car is red, if you don’t want to switch to other trim colors and want to stay with the ivory trims, and if you are unsure if the red carpet will look good in your car, please check out the pictures in my gallery. See link:

so how did you end up removing and reattaching the vents to the carpet? Did you dremel out the lock washer and use new ones like Tom did in his install?

I used Dremel to get rid of the push nuts. It was easy to remove the vents.

I didn't use the push nut again. On the passenger side, I drilled two small holes and use two small screws and bolts to attach the vent to the carpet. I have the Type-R type carpet and it's thick. The vent is kind of secure once you have placed the vent on the carpet.

On the driver side, I used the staple gun and stapled the vent onto the carpet. You can't see the staples thanks to the thickness of the carpet.

I guess the trick is to pre cut the carpets received from MovIt-USA by placing the old carpets on the new one. Try to duplicate as much as you can. I also used the big plastic pieces from the old carpet since they provide more of a flat look on the sides. What you want to do is to lay the carpets down, when you are certain you don't need anymore adjustments, then place the two plastic guides in place and staple the carpets onto the plastic guides.

I hope this helps.

Looks like a very nice color combination for an almost older monochrome interior especially for a red exterior car. Is the color red a little darker than the photo's show? I think the flash washed them out a little and if they are a little darker, I think you have a great color combo. Good job on the install. Do they really cost $1000 or so for replacement?

The red color is kind of bright, but not too bright. I think the color complements the exterior well. I didn't know how the red color would turn out, I just wanted to get rid of the old carpets. But, it turned out great. After the install, it appears that two-tone (red carpet and ivory floor mats) will look the best in my car. IMO offcourse.

It's so hard to work with ivory interior. Now I have the carpets replaced, I have been looking for custom ivory or off-white floor mats in the last few days. No luck! To make things even more difficult, I have aftermarket sub in the footwell area. Therefore, the passenger side floor mat needs to be custom made. I have been unable to find something identical or something totally satisfactory. Suddenly, I had this idea of cutting my existing passenger side floor mat. Check out the result:

I guess I have just saved myself some $$$$. The existing floor mats will last me awhile before encountering the same headache again.

If you order the red carpets from the dealer say DelRay the prices are:

88302-SL0-T00ZG $287.44
88303-SL0-T00AF $287.44
88307-SL0-A02ZG $170.34
88308-SL0-A01ZG $157.62
Shipping $100.00
Total 1,002,84

And you don't know when the carpets will arrrive(last time dealer quoted me 2-3 months).

MovIt-USA's red carpet set is Type-R similar. It's pretty thick and I kind of feel the interior noise has reduced in my car. The best part, it will cost only $600. The only drawback is that unlike the factory carpets where you just put them in place, you need to do a little work in order to get the MovIt-USA installed in you car. But, we all love working on our cars, right?
