Autoweek (23-Sep, page 4) had more details on the coming Lambo L140 (Stella / baby Lambo).
- aluminum spaceframe chassis from Audi
- 5.0L V10 with >500 hp
- 6-speed with permanent AWD (unclear if Quattro)
- target weight < 3100 lbs
- sticker in the $165-180K range

Even better, Audi reportedly plans to use the same floorplan and drivetrain in its coming RSR sportscar, presumably lower-priced.

In a separate column its mentioned that the Audi "S" (performance) cars are moving to all-motor (N/A) configurations, including a new V8 (4.2L / 344 hp / 296 ft-lb) for the new S4, and the (same?) V10 (5L) in the new S6. These should be QUICK, given that the new RS6 sedan/wagon does 0-60 in 4.6 sec

This is consistent with BMW reportedly preparing a new V10 for the new M5 sedan and M6 coupe.

And Acura will STILL have a V6 in the NSX

BUT.... the RS6 uses a twin turbo set-up with twin air/air intercoolers whereas the new S4 is normally aspirated.

The nice thing about the old twin turbo V6 S4s was the ease with which extra power could be extracted from them. Throw in a chip for another 50-80 rwhp. The lack of forced induction on the V8 in the new model takes that away. Then, add in an extra 330 pounds to the curb weight and another $4-5k to the sticker price compared to the previous model, and this S4 doesn't look like such a hot commodity.

From VWVortex.com:

"...the new S4 has a normally aspirated 4.2l V8 rated at 344hp and 302 lb-ft of torque. When converted from European DIN horsepower ratings to our SAE rating along with a few usual U.S. spec differences horsepower is expected to be closer to 334hp when it arrives on our shores next spring. This is a strong offering with equal horsepower to the M3 and more torque. However...

Third - There were lots of rumors circulating that Audi was going to do everything they could to reduce the weight of the new S4 - The new weight in European trim? 3,660 lbs. The old B5 S4 in European trim weighed in at 3,328 lbs. - 332 lbs less than the new one. Expect the U.S. version to be even heavier than the European version. All that weight plus the driveline friction of Quattro will make things a little tough on the new S4, particularly going head to head with the likes of the BMW M3, its inevitable competitor.

Fourth - Pricing has not been announced for the new S4, but it is expected to be in the $45,000 to $48,000 range making it about equal to the new BMW M3 but also about $5000 more than the outgoing model."

I'd fully expect them to detune it, in keeping with "family delineation"... which gives the next round of Audi/aftermarket tuner opportunities : to "undo" the de-tuning, and bring it up to L140 spec.

Similar to the way Bimmer used to detune the US-spec M motors.

The new Audi S4 shown at the Paris Motor Show has a 344 hp 4.2L V8, with a 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) in 5.6 sec. Competition for the E46 M3, and certainly a fast 4-door sedan. Although their own even-faster RS6 is already up there.

Mercedes is also raising the bar on power/speed...

SL55 (GT roadster) has Viper-class power from its 5.5L V8: 493 hp and over 500 ft-lb torque... 0-60 times in the low 4s...

S600 (luxury sedan) with 5.5L V12: 493 hp and 590 ft-lb torque -- 0-60 in 4.8 sec

CL (luxury coupe) -- CL55 (5.5L V8-SC) and CL600 (5.5L V12-TT) both with 500 hp and 0-60 in 4.6 sec

#############

These SL55 AMG cars are FAST. I saw one in action at one of the F1 support races -- Porsche Super Cup series, using 911GT3 (N/A lightweight racecars). On one race, a car was honking down the straightaway, and his rear end started smoking... driver was not aware of this, and kept going. The SL55 safety car roared out of the pits, chased him down, caught him, and pulled him over... not bad for a heavy, slushbox-equipped, GT car.

Oh man... those SL55's are my dream car. I think I'd even take one of those over a Lambo. =) They're just... perfect!

The E46 M3 has under 5 second 0-60 and will keep up with the NSX quite nicely all the way to 100 mph, assuming that you don't blow up the motor.

Was just reading about the new W211 E55 sports sedan -- has the same 5.5L V8-SC as the SL55 (almost 500 hp, over 500 torque)

Power/Performance
... the four-door E 55 AMG accelerates to the 100 km/h mark in 4.7 seconds, and has its maximum speed electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Power transmission is provided by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic gearbox. The manual driving mode allows the driver to change gears via buttons on the steering wheel, as in a Formula 1 racing car.

AIRMATIC DC semi-active suspension, tuned to AMG specifications

In order to ensure that the full engine power at their disposal is transferred to the road, the Mercedes-AMG engineers have redesigned the chassis and braking system. The shock absorbers and springs of the AIRMATIC DC semi-active suspension system adapt instantaneously to the driving situation, and the desired suspension setting can also be selected manually through three stages at the touch of a button. The spring struts, shock absorbers, stabilisers and the electronic suspension control system have been optimised to AMG specifications, as has the power transmission with a new steel rear axle and differential cooling. The high-performance braking system with Sensotronic Brake Control is taken from the SL 55 AMG.

Wide-base tyres – 245/40 ZR 18 at the front and 265/35 ZR 18 at the rear – maintain impressive contact with the road surface. The rubber is mounted on eye-catching AMG light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design. The E 55 AMG comes as standard with dynamic AMG bodystyling and new sports seats in an exclusive nappa/nubuk leather combination.
