I bought my new NSX in St. Louis and drove it 2500 miles back to Seattle.
Whenever I stopped for gas I noticed what smelled like burning clutch coming from the driver's rear wheel well (stopped many times and got 26 mpg overall BTW). I initially chalked this up to a new car being hot and burning new oils etc off the engine. One other thing I noticed was a couple of mornings it would grind a bit going into 1st when cold...after it warmed up briefly- no problem.

When I got back home the smell continued but the clutch never slipped and
felt fine...still had the occassional grind into 1st though. I took it in to my
dealer and without reservation, they replaced the clutch assy, flywheel etc
under warranty. The flywheel had a couple of burnt spots and the disc was
glazed slightly but not all that bad. While my car was there I had a set of Bilsteins installed on the lower perch...the only way to go if you don't want
to scrape all the time yet want the lowered look and better handling IMO.
I've done springs before but this is the second time I've done Bilsteins.

Drove home with my new clutch, about 50 miles, and pulled into my garage and I smell the burning smell again! I only have about 100 miles total on the new clutch; I realize that new clutches can smell for a while but somehow I think this is different. I called my tech and explained my situation and he's scratching his head...maybe catalytic converters, shit
who knows. This new clutch feels fine also.

This is my 5th new NSX and never smelled anything like this before...any
ideas what's going on?

Thanks,

Perhaps this information could help:

"Do you have a customer complaint that their M/T is difficult to shift into 1st or that it grinds when trying to shift into reverse? It is probably caused by inadequate clutch disk spline lubrication. Inadequate clutch disk spline lubrication can cause the clutch disk to drag against the flywheel when the clutch is disengaged.

This clutch drag makes it difficult to shift into 1st gear and reverse when the engine is running, particularly when the clutch and transmission are cold.
To prevent or fix this type of clutch drag, lubricate the mainshaft splines with Super High Temperature Urea grease, P/N 08798-9002."

This might explain why you're having some first gear grinds as well as why there were burnt spots on the flywheel. It's possible that it was overlooked during assembly.

Wow, your knowledge of technical bulletins is phenominal.
Are you an Acura technician? Where/what is your source?

Thanks.

I am wondering if it is just possible that it is oils etc...burning off of the engine etc...When I bought my MR2 Spyder new, it too had some odd smells at first. A couple of years later when I installed my custom exhaust, it had funny smells for the first 500+ miles. Just a thought...
