I brought my X in for CV boots today at Silverhill Acura in Calgary and they tell me I should do the TB/WP. Which is fine because I needed it done. It will take 16 hours plus parts. Got a price from NW Acura and they quoted me 12.5 hours plus parts. The problem is now they say I should do the clutch and AC while they are doing the other stuff. They will add another 6 hours plus parts for everything else. Total bill to be around 6-7K. Ouch! The other quote I got from my Honda dealer he says he can to the TB/WP in 9 hours. Now if the one guy can charge me an extra 6 hours to do everything else (ie the clutch and AC condenser) who would it be best to go with. I really like the mechanic at Silverhill because he comes out to talk to me and explain stuff so I would like to stay loyal to him but we are talking about 1-2k difference. What do you think?

So is something wrong with the Clutch or AC?...I would not replaced the Clutch or AC as part of maintenance, only if the Clutch is slipping or the AC compressor is bad.

Timing belt and water pump yes, and the associated belts, plus you may want to do the following as well.
- Plugs
- Valve adjustment

AC is not working did a conversion and it did not work so shop said the condenser is shot. the shop also said the clutch is a bit high. So.. if you are doing the TB and WP may as well do the others.

Clutch is a bit high is normal. All NSX clutches grab high. Like Bram said, unless it's slipping, don't touch it. And if you are going to change it, go with a SOS clutch rather than OEM.

Did the mechanic mean compressor, not condenser? Only way a condenser is shot is if it's all clogged up.

Yes it was the compressor that is shot. Where do I get a SOS clutch? What is special about a SOS clutch? Iguess the mechanich said that if it was his he would change it for the extra 2 hours he is charging for plus the 2K for the parts.

Why don't you tell us a little bit about your NSX:

- Year, mileges etc.

You can get the SOS from Science of Speed a great vendor for NSX stuff...Google SOS

Two hours extra to change a clutch, that is great because it take about 8-10 hours for a Clutch job.

I have a 1991 BB NSX with 96K that I bought from the GM of a Acura dealership. When I bought the vehicle he told me it was in perfect shape and it needed nothing. He had all of the work done. I took him for his word and now 3 years later I have some routine maintenece to do. This year I have changed the oil (I do this twice a year), put new tires on ( the last ones were new and lasted 8K), had a wheeel alignment done, relaced the cv boots on the rear and tried to recharge and update the AC because it stopped working this year. So, when I brought it in for the wheel alignment the dealership asked me about the TB and WP. I was expecting to change that at the end of the season. What I wanted was to get the CV boots and the AC going first. The dealership said that the upgrade kit for the AC did not work and that the condenser is shot. Ok fine but then they say the clutch is a bit high and if I was going to change the TB and WP they can do everything else at the same time. So anyhow, they gave me a quote today for $7900 for TB/WP/AC/and Clutch. I asked them for the best price and they came back with $6300.00 including tax. Is this reasonable?

The Clutch is normally high on an NSX, so unless it slipping under high torque and load I would not change it, at 96K it could well be on the second clutch.

As for the Price:
- TB and WP is normally $2K
- Clutch replacement $2700 - $3K
- AC it's hard to say but $1-$1.5K (all depends on what is wrong)

So $6300 all in is about right, but try and get them to do a Tune up (96K service) as part of the deal..they are in there already

Please let us know how you make out.
