Anyone in the Newburgh/West Point, NY area mind letting me borrow a car for the weekend of the 20-22 of this month? I know its a strange request, but I need a car to pick up my date for this formal ball we are having at West Point that weekend. Problem is I'm too young to rent cause most places require a renter to be at least 24, and most of the firsties, or seniors, here are leaving with their cars that weekend.

Don't need an NSX (though that would be extremely awesome), just some wheels (A working 88 Toyota Camry would be just fine). I can promise a full tank of gas on return and maybe a tour of the campus. As collateral, I would leave my laptop, which although nowhere near the value of a car, is completely necessary for any school work. I would definitely have to return for my laptop to even connect to USMA's internal network.

Tried it, but they have a $115 a day surcharge for under 25. Not exactly a cost I can stomach for 3 days. They do allow those 18 and over in the military to rent without this charge, but I would have to be doing so on official business, and this isn't exactly official business.

I must say this thread did make me think of this one...

I think there is a saying that says something like "two things you never lend your mates.... your wheels or your girlfriend..."

Whats wrong with a taxi or limo?

Cause I'd be making a number to short trips here and there, which would likely end up being even more expensive than renting from Avis, which is already exhorbitant. I know its a lot to ask, but I just hope I'll get lucky and not have to shuck out over 300 that weekend for transpo cause I'm already spending way too much. Again, just looking for a local beater, NSX if someone is feeling really generous. I know no one likes a freeloader, but I'm just in a bit of a bind. Again, I'd borrow one from my friends here, but the seniors who are allowed to keep cars on campus are all taking off for the weekend because it is a pass weekend. Then the numbers game - Avis $115 a day, Enterprise $95 a day, then gas and taxes = >$400. Taxis - probably making at least 6 ten mile trips and then the trip to Laguardia = 6*40 + 2*200= $640. If I take the train and taxis - 10 ten mile trips (4 more for getting to station and getting to station to airport twice), 2 round trip train tickets, = 10*40+2*40=$480.

Again, I'm just asking for a beater, although a really generous NSX wouldn't be bad.

I remember when I was 19 and renting a C-310 to fly somewhere, but then couldn't rent a car at the FBO because they said I was too young to rent a crappy Ford Escort.

Let's see C310R = $150,000+
Ford Escort = $15,000

Again Im talking a super duper beater. I would never lend anyone a car of value. Id also figure out the insurance issues.

And DayanABR....no way in hell is anyone gonna lend you an NSX. No matter how GENEROUS i doubt anyone would be that DUMB.

Good luck with the transportation issue. Sounds like a bummer. Why not just get a motel room and spend the time wisely.

Oh come on! Your not that confused! You know very well the training and hours involved to get your twin engine licence and then more hours to be rated on type... Therefore you have already demonstrated a level of responsibility and experience to be trusted to rent a Cessna 310.

But a car rental company have no idea how much experience you have in a car or how responsible you are... They only have statistics to go by! And the statistics are not good for the under 25 age bracket.

You are not alone though... Jenson Button was too young to rent a car when he was driving a formula 1 car!

You have the weekend off and don't have a car already lined up or enough money to rent one? Curious to know what your spending too much money on? Possibly take another weekend off when a friend has one to borrow.
