Gerry called me Saturday night to infrom me that the engine is done. The darton pro sleeves finally came in. The engine will be shipped back to me the first week of Jan. The shop said the will have everything on it and back together a week after the receive the engine. The bad thing is that the AEM unit is not released yet, just like I thought it would be. I am going with the HKS F-Con.

If you do the FCON, let us all know the ease and success. If you haven't committed yet and you want the "best" at least according to FactorX, you might want to give Mike a call about using the Motec. Something like $4500 including the wiring harness. Me, well I'm still not sure.

HKS makes GREAT products. The only reason I went with the e-manage was HKS will not release the software from the dealers. That jacked up the cost of tuning. The other thing was they did not have a harness for the NSX at the time. Has that changed? Dan

I am not sure about the wiring harness. The owner of the shop suggested the F-CON. He has had alot of luck with tunning them. I can ask him after the holidays about the wiring harness. How difficult was the E-Manage to tune?

Well, the injector and map control work well. Data log also very good. The VTEC control still needs work. Greddy says all the systems work on their 2 cars in Japan but my ignition ecu siginal needs the right size resister. Apparently the Japanese and US ecu's have a slightly different ignition siginal and the e-manage gets confused. I need to send Greddy some oscilloscope readings and they should have a fix. Let me know who your tuner is, I would like to talk to him about the HKS. Dan

Myexperience with the AEM is that there is no better buy, at any price under 4 grand. It works just as the factory ECU, except all is programmable. Motec is the most overpriced unit out there, and looses many factory options. AEM has put tens of thousands of miles on the NES computer In John C's NS, and it is awesome. I have been programming other models of the AEM, using the same software, and it incredible. If you would like to know just what your NSX tech of choice will be able to do, you can download the software for free, and see just what you getting for your money before you buy it. If you buy Motec, you better find a dealer who you doesn't charge 300. or 400. an hour to tune, because he had to pay Motec 40 grand to be a dealer, or somesuch outrageous amount.
AEM has the exact same limitations as Motec and Haltech and Electromotion (another excellant choice) and even Pactels 10 grand Pi system- garbage in- garbage out. Its up to the tuner you know, and the gear he is proffcient at

Mark,
I would have loved to use the AEM. As of last Friday the unit was not released to the public yet. From what I understand they have some with a supercharger running it, a turbo car and a N/A to verify all settings. If they can have one to me in the next 2 weeks I would definately use that. I agree on the Motec being way too expensive. Thanks for the help.

AEM is apparently released for NSX -

They are released. I saw 6 NSX boxes on the shelf this afternoon. I don't know how many are on backorder and if those are already alloted. The interest in this box has been very high, much higher than we thought it would be.

Part # listed for 91-95 NSX is 30-1002

MB is absolutely right, the AEM could shape up to be the best bang for the buck. We have tuned Supras and many Hondas with the unit in addition to a few NHRA clients vehicles. However, the unit has not been proven with the NSX as of yet and we do not like to recommend/sell products to our clients until they are fully baked. We have an excellent relationship with JC and have the utmost confidence it will be a huge benefit for the NSX community.

In order to become a Motec dealer/tuner you need to go through extensive training with Big George. This seminar is invite only and is attended by the top tuners in the nation such as Mr. Norton and Jon Koryama. Mike was fortunate enough to attend the Motec seminar with these top guns.

"AEM has the exact same limitations as Motec and Haltech and Electromotion (another excellant choice) and even Pactels 10 grand Pi system- garbage in- garbage out"

To say that the AEM is on the same level as Motec or Pectel is an incorrect statement. In addition, the Motec does have the ability to retain your factory options. Most choose not to keep many factory options because the vehicles are strictly used for racing. MB, have you tuned any vehicles with these systems? You should definitely try these systems before passing judgment on them. Maybe a low comp, high boost BBSC owner would be interested. The Motec and Pectel are top shelf systems and have been utilized by thousands of vehicles over the past decade. They are proven and have numerous features not found in any other system. There is a reason they are used by F1, WRC, SCORE, NHRA, and yes even AEM sponsored teams.

It is important to have a tuner that has the experience and knowledge of several engine management systems in order to provide the client with proper application for their needs. Tuning an NSX is not the same as bolting on parts to an NSX. We have tuned vehicles with just about every engine management system out there (AEM, TEC II, Haltech, Autronics, Speedpro, Power FC, F-CON, etc.) Choosing an engine management system really comes down to what the goals are for the project. The Motec and Pectel Systems are not for everyone, but they are the very best and nothing on the market even comes close to their functions. If anyone has questions regarding the systems mentioned above please send us an email and we will do our best to answer.

Excellent post Factor-X. I was shocked to read what MB had to say about the above mentioned units.

Can you please give us examples of all of the factory options you lose? I didn't think there are ANY, but since you said they did, could you tell us what they are?

I believe you mean Electromotive, and what are their limitations?

Like FactorX stated, there is a reason why the fastest cars in the WORLD (yes, including F1!) use MoTeC. Besides that, I do believe the AEM is no doubt a great value.

Very funny to read what you had to say about their competition. Once again, you get what you pay for.
