My AC blows ice cold, but randomly the compressor shuts off (or on)

I thought it was related only to hard sprints - but lately it can be doing it when I'm sitting idle at a light, or even when I am cruising along in 5th gear @ 3k RPM with the cruise on.

The air condition will be blowing ice cold and then the cold will just quit.

I even thought it was only doing it when it was REALLY hot out, but then it did it the other night in the rain :frown:

To make it stranger, I would stop the car and start it again and that seemed to fix it. But now, even if I turn the car off for a couple of minutes and crank her back up - no go. Sometimes after it goes off, 10-15 minutes goes by and for no reason it starts right back up - MID DRIVE!

Maybe a loose wire that gets jiggled around when I hit bumps? Maybe a short somehwhere? Maybe it's slipping and can't keep the compressor spinning at all times? *shrug*

No, the dash shows everything works, the air keeps blowing hard, I just lose all cold air completely. I have tried turning it on and off on the dash and changing all the settings, but it wont come back. Then if I just turn the fan down and drive for a while, sometimes it comes back on blowing ICE COLD again!

:frown:

The cold air goes away pretty quick, probably about the speed it takes to empty the duct work.

I live in the Northwest and with the current gas price, there's not many of times in a year I'd use A/C... I'm the weird one, I don't like strong air blowing at my face, thus I always leave my system at drawing air from outside, a/c off, and fan speed at lowest. I just adjust the temp whenever I'm hot /cold.

My situation is totally different than yours, I'll have cold a/c air come out with A/C Off.. And I beleived there's couple times in the rain when I need the a/c to dry the windsheild, a/c acted up. Seems it will work fine after I kill the car and restarted. It happens maybe few times a year... Aside from the fuse, anything I needed to checked?? or I have to send the board to Briank to fix it??

My car does that to from time to time also, I know that it not my CCU telling the compressor to run I can even have the CCU off and I will get cold air. The signal from CCU to tell the compressor to run is not a direct connection it goes through 2 other control boards. I beleive one is the fan control and I have heard that that control board can also have problems. One of these days I will look into it on my car.

May I suggest you go to the service manual on this site and run the self diagnostic test for your climate control system.Page 22-12
You may have a faulty ambient temp. sensor (there are two, one outside and one inside the car). Your problem could be any number of things but this is a easy place to start and it's free! Look over this section of the manual and perhaps it will point you in the right direction. http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Reference/1991_svcman/1991servman.pdf

Ah thanks, I got those manuals in the trunk

Update: A/C fuses (10AMP+10AMP) fixed me!

All of my fuses were good, but after moving the thin/cheap looking one over to the hazard spot and moving the OEM style one in so that I have 2 matching/tight fitting 10 AMP fuses in the A/C fan spots - ALL OF MY A/C PROBLEMS HAVE VANISHED!

Thanks for the tips guys :) I can't believe that fixed it.
