You can listen to partial samples on of some tracks on amazon. Also, winamp shoutcast is a great way to to hear tunes.
If you are more an 'extended preview', kinda guy, various peer to to peer programs are the way to go unless you know someone who runs a good FTP site (ratio or otherwise).
I've been very happy using shoutcast and buying CDs to rip to my collection.
