In the October '03 issue of the British mag, "CAR", there is an article beginning on page 14 that discusses upcoming high-performance gas/electric hybrids. They mention Honda's Dualnote showcar, which utilizes a 300bhp 3.5 liter V-6 and two 50bhp electric motors to turn the front wheels. This is relevant to us because the article states:

"..........And the headline news is that the production NSX, due in summer 2004, will use the same hybrid powertrain."

All I can say is don't flame the messenger, flame the message......

I heard a rumor that the next NSX would be powered by a "V-10 F1 engine".

Let's face it folks, we won't know what the nest NSX will be like until we actually see one.

Im really scared that they might not do a good job on the next generation NSX. Replacing a legend is a really tough job. Just look at the new BMW 5 series. Though it is really good. It is being criticized of not being as good as the previous generation 5 series when it was first introduced.

Just met an America Honda product research "person" for Honda corp in Torrance Ca. We were hanging out and having a beer and informally I popped a couple of NSX questions. Hoping to get at lease some small detail on the next NSX but to my surprise there seem to me No firm design for the car. HE quoted "it is in the Early - Early stage " in planning

Can't really quote on our conversation but from the sound of this Person, Honda haven't decided if NSX should stay a special project as a near $100K car or go down to a Supra, 350Z competitor. So unless there is a super tight redesign project already in the works. There is practically no real detail on the car within Honda corp.

So don't wait for the next model. Should be at lease 3-4 years in the making if a redesign should surface.

Just passing on some info...
Could be a smoke screen who knows.

I just got back from Frankfurt and the 2003 International Auto Show. Honda didn't have a lot of concept type cars. They did bring the 2004 NSX (got some pictures of the new shift knob) and a JGTC NSX race car.

The NSX was very popular - probably because it was the only exotic where the people could actually get in side and check it out! Most of the other cars were ropped off and you couldn't get inside them at all.

I searched the floor for Honda factory people and found a couple that spoke english. The story on the NSX is pretty much what the Autoweek people reported on page 22 of the Sept 22, 2003 issue: "expect re-engineered and restyled model in '05 with a larger displacement engine and a lighter chasis".

Sounds good to me!

What NSX needs to do is to take the route of the Porsche 911 over the past 30 something years

They should make small changes but always a sure step forward. Slow evolution into more and more perfection.

I think that if they do a complete overhaul, they might ruin the NSX.

I also heard that they don't know what class to put it in. They should not put it against the likes of the 350Z or MAZDA RX8, it would make it lose its exotic status. It should be in the class of Porsche 911 Carrera since it is actually a direct competitor of that car.

I very much agree with that...the NSX is actually more expensive than a 911 carrera or Viper GTS and is firmly in the exotic car catagory. It's chassis is still among the worlds best...even Gordon Murray ! (the leading designer of the legendary Mclaren F1) stated that he wanted to model the F1's general chassis layout and design after Honda's NSX...that's a direct quote*

Let's face it, the ONLY issue with NSX's are their power output *stock.* If it were nearer to lets say....even 380 BHP (at its current weight), that car would still be on the top of all charts.

Hell, Honda can just install a nice low boost turbo kit (a la Lotus V8, and Honda has the racing experience and engineers to do an A-1 job with F/I too)...with a refined block/cooling/pistons for F/I....bolt-on superior rolling stock (larger/wider...wheels/tires)....and wala, you have the new NSX; worth every penny of 100K. With 360 eater performace ;)

I agree with you all the way up to the turbo part

I mean no offence but I hate TURBOS. Any half-witted manufacturer can pump out huge amounts of horsepower using a turbo blower. But when it comes to using Engine technology to pump out power, that’s were the real pros show their technological know-how.

It would be a shame if HONDA, one of the world's leading Engine Technology Researchers, resorted to plain old turbo blowers after all.

TURBOS give non linear engine output and hence are not preferable for ultimate driving vehicles. This is why the Maclaren has no turbo and so do all the new Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

I think that the NSX is putting out only 290 HP because of the gentleman agreement in Japan not to exceed that output. I think they would have no trouble cranking more HP since they can get 245 HP from the 2.0 Liter engine of the S2000

Other than that, I agree, the NSX can be easily compared to up to date exotics if it had more power
