The CPU mod is needed to install the chip. It consists of 1) desoldering the stock chip from the ECU circuit board, 2) installing a zero insertion force (ZIF) socket in place of the chip, and 3) installing the aftermarket chip into the socket.

If you happen to be fortunate enough to have an ECU which already has a ZIF socket installed, then of course you don't need the mod performed twice, just pop in the new chip.
