mis-shift problem

Hi, I have a problem of mis shifting from 2-3 right before red line...

I would rather think it's the operator (which is me) fault than blaming on the tight shift linkage...

Last Saturday I went to an hour drive with fellow nsx'ers and I mis shifted it couple times. I'm not sure it's a combinaion of lack of sleep, or just that I'm a little hyper of the whole event, or just that I'm not good enough... (It happens more often when I got an occupant...)

I found it very hard for me to practise the shift in normal days, except going to HDPE, (which i will anyway) anybody have any good idea of improving shift technique...

(I'm pretty good and quick on shifting gears and I believed I can do the heel and toe pretty well on all speed. I only mis shift in very rare occasion but it does happen in the wrong time and embarassed the hell of me.)

I'm trying to improve the skills, and I value driving is a zero mistake tolerance game. What can I do to eliminate that??

Please give me some advise.

The second to third shift in the NSX can be problematic. I once read where someone suggested making it two shifts, just with one motion. IOW, once the clutch is depressed, shift from second into neutral, pause a microsecond, then shift into third.

It has been my experience that in both my cars rapid upshifts from second to third are likely (more likely) to grind or "catch" or just be a little difficult. It does not seem to matter if I am just starting out or have been driving for a while. And yes, it is usually only when I am shifting near redline, as that is typically when I am shifting the quickest. HTH.

I too experienced this when I was first getting used to driving our NSX. It seems the gates are a bit farther apart than our other Hondas. All of our other hondas use rods for the shift linkage as opposed to cables in the NSX (the Prelude uses a cable shifter as well but I have not driven one of those). Not sure if this is why it needs more space but it could be one reason. Anyway, I find in our other Hondas, when shifting from 2 to 3, I can slam the shifter straight up and it will automatically slide over to the middle in neutral and up into third without a problem. When I tried this in the NSX, the shifter would get stuck in neutral between the first gear and third gear gates. It does not slide over to the right fast enough to be able to engage third. Not sure if this is what you are experiencing or not.

To remedy this mis-shift problem, I had to modify the way I was shifting in the NSX. When shifting at redline hard from 2 to 3, I would conciously push the shifter at an angle toward the right as I pushed upward. In other words, instead of just pushing the shifter straight up, aim it at the third gear gate so to speak. Not sure if I explained this very well. If not, I'll try to reword it or take a picture to help explain what I mean. Hope this helps you out!

Just revisit the basics, make sure that your driving position is correct in regards to your reach for the steering wheel + shift knob, I see many drivers sitting way back and not in a proper position to shift/steer correctly.

BTW: I owned a 93 and a 2000 Prelude and the NSX shifting is very similar to both, smooth and very accurate, then again my NSX has a 6 speed.
