Metal guard over the right rear axle joint. required?

The metal guard over the joint on the right rear axle as it joins the intermediate shaft.

Is this guard important and needed?

The left side axle does not have this guard.

It's tight, to the CV strap where you punch it down, i could punch it down more but if it's not required i will leave it off.

Yes, your inner CV joint /grease will thank you for keeping that exhaust heat shield in place!
