Mercedes ML55 AMG experiences?

I have a chance to buy a mint '02 (last year of 3 year production run). I know the first few years were not good for the basic ML's, but I was wondering if the AMG version is built to a much higher standard (is this built in Germany or in Alabama where the other ML'S are?).
