mechanical engine sound?

I was just watching the Car and Driver video of a yellow 2001 nsx and I heard when the guy revs the engine, the engine makes a very mechanical sound. I have a 93nsx with the stock exhaust and mine does not make such a mechanical sound even when I rev it stand-still. Is this mechanical sound from the unrestricted header that the 2001 has or the new exhaust system from 97+ models. I'd really like to know. what do you think guys? What do I have to do to get this mechanical note? change exhaust or headers? thanks!

I think the stock sound is more mechanical then when I started changing the airbox filter, headers, and exhaust.

The sound is that real "sewing machine" sound of the valves, cams, etc in their mechanical symphony.

Maybe you have the sound and didn't know you had it. That or your music is up to loud?!

That's possible.

madfast, have you ever listened to the sound of your NSX from outside the car, or only from behind the wheel?

No i've never heard the engine from behind the wheels. Only from inside. but when I rev the car the sound is more subtle not as high pitched as the 2001 nsx that was tested on car and driver. I think I will get an exhaust. I know that the 93 nsx has more restrictive headers and exhaust. I'll try saving up for an exhaust first.

If you're going for sound, the exhaust is probably a good choice. However, when it comes to power, the headers are without a doubt a much bigger improvement in performance on an early NSX. You may already know this, but I figured I should mention it before you spend your hard-earned money.
