From the People's Republic of Massachusetts...

Boston representative, Liz Malia, has RE-introduced the bill (H.D. 1882), UNCHANGED from last year, OUTLAWING all non-stock exhaust systems in Massachusetts!

This means no headers, Tubis, Taitecs or ANY changes from stock!

For those NSX and automotive enthusiasts out there...you may want to contact your representatives before it slides on through.

Thanks for informing this!

In practice, I wonder how the inspectors or law enforcement officers would recognize the difference between OEM and non-OEM exhausts, headers and etc., especially on a rare car like NSX.

Mass is such a strange state.

The legislature here in Hawaii once tried to introduce a similar law outlawing all aftermarket parts other than OEM parts. Needless to say, it never passed since the automotive parts stores like Napa, Pepboys, and similar all lobbied agaist this bill. Problem with this bill was that nearly everyting could be considered non OEM like different brands of tires, OE replacement parts and such. Anyway, I believe that bill as well as this exhaust one in Massachusetts is unconstitutional since it restricts the consumers choices in replacement parts. It gives a monopoly to the dealers. Aftermarket non OEM exhuasts don't always have to be performace oriented and can simply be OE replacements, thus, this bill more than likely IMHO will not pass. At least I hope not.

...

What is the rationale?

Regards.

I guess Midas and the like are going to go out of business replacing mufflers...

Why would Midas go out of business?

I assume they would continue to sell approved factory equivalents.

I also assume that Midas would not be able to install any non-approved aftermarket systems such as cat-back exhausts, headers, etc.

If you live in Mass don't assume this bill is DOA. Make the call and write the letter.

I assume the rationale is noise abatement.
