man made disaster

If they build it up and make it liveable who do you think will be living there--the poor? I don't think so!
At one time, the poorest people lived along the lake in Ithaca--but they made it so nature wouldn't destroy
the lakefront property--who lives there now?

I give up. Who?

Okay, the author identified and defined the problem but left out the solution.

What is the solution? I sure as hell don't know.

I guess we should not rely on the government for everything. Cut out some of the government programs and put some of these people back to work! Buying food, paying rent, ect. and making contribution.

Well it looks like the government is going to give away some more of our tax dollars.

"They are going to start issuing debit cards, $2,000 per adult, today at the Astrodome," said Kathy Walt, a spokeswoman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

The cards could be used to buy food, transportation, gas and other essentials that displaced people need, according to a state official who was on the call and requested anonymity because the program had not been publicly announced..."

The irony of the whole situation is that the people complaining that the government did a poor and inefficient job of handling the katrina aftermath is that they are the same who demand that the government take full control of our healthcare system with a socialized one party payer system.

Was Steveny reading some other article?.... I don't get it

I was using Ithaca, my home town as a example. If NO is rebuilt to a better standard than before the storm hit there will be no place for the people who lived there before the storm. NO is a poor town because it is not the safest place to live.... 10-25 feet below sea level. I watched it happen right here with my own eyes. The lake use to flood the houses out every year along the shore. As soon as the problem was fixed the people who lived along the lake were bought out and high dollar houses were erected where the shacks use to be.
Now if Cayuga county would just do the same on the west side of Owasso lake I will make a bucket load of loot on the property I own there.

Man, this article is making the rounds. I have seen a link to this thing on three different sites now.

I think the author makes some valid points. If the government provides people with everything they need to live, they will no longer be self sufficient. Thus, in the wake of a natural disaster where people NEED to take care of themselves, and they are unable to due to a life of governmental dependance, chaos ensues.

I think there are a lot of government programs out there with very good intent, but they end up creating dependancy which restricts people from reaching their potential.

My co-worker and i were talking about this same thing the other day. People need to stop relying on the gov. for everything. No one will take care of you but yourself.

That link refers to The Robert Taylor Homes and Cabrinin Greene. I have helped friends move into new condos only blocks from Cabrini Greene in Chicago. I was a bit confused when helping due to the eco/socio divide in the neighborhood (this is all over Chicago). It seemed unsafe to move into his VERY expensive NEW condo!

There are all kinds of OLD neighborhoods that are being rebuilt and the poor are flushed out by multi-million dollar three flats. This is what will happen in NO. The rich will come in and make it more "desireable" for tourists and profits.

Chicago is currently under a movement to move people back into the city from the suburbs. STL is trying to do it too, but they are a LONG way behind.
The only problem is putting the poorer families into a quality situation from which they have been displaced. They are mostly "moved" out.
