Looking to update stereo with Nav and Bluetooh

So I know I am going to miss my nav system from the vette. I used it all the time.

What do you all recommend to put a unit integrated into the NSX?

Do they all need an external amp? Will they work with the stock speakers?

What is the approximate costs for everything I need?

The first thing you need to do is have your center console customized for a double din or purchase an aftermarket double din console. The 2 most popular choices for a Nav unit are Kenwood or Pioneer. Either unit won't necessarily need an external amp if you plan on keeping the OEM speakers. SoS sells a few items you may find useful such as a bracket to fit/hold your double din in place, adapters so you can plug your aftermarket stereo into the factory wire harness, and double din consoles.
 
+1 on the post above me, I would get the Double Din from SOS. and as for useing the OEM speakers, you would need to Unplug the amps, then jumper into the speaker input on each door, then get one of those OE plugs that plug into the OEM radio Pigtail, and splice the wires to the doors, into the new radio, If you dont do this when the new radio is installed you would only need to turn it up to 1 and it will be loud as shit. as the OEM radio is PRE-out only, so it pre-outs to the OEM amps and then the OEM amps pump the volume to the desired level.


hope I wasnt to confusing on this. its not hard. the hardest part will be making the new radio fit.

I was tring to explain how to do it. and yes they sell it on SOS. Im more of a do it myself kinda guy. its fun for me. they say I dont get out much. LOL. but yeah that kit from SOS would probably be the way to go. but for 29.00.

you could make one for almost nothing if you just sat down and tried ya know
 
You can go with either a single or double DIN setup. If you want to go turbo later, I would suggest a single DIN since you can install the gauges. When I get my center console back from STMPO, I will post pictures of a single DIN Kenwood with a ashtray delete and gauges. I use a separate amp but that is not necessary. You will need to replace the stock speakers. The stock speakers are amplified and more importantly, equalized for the Bose speaker.

Other options for the NAV would include Kenwood, Pioneer and lastly Eclipse. I really like Eclipse but they went out of business. Don't know about Panasonic or Blaupunkt. I've only used Kenwood and Eclipse Nav units and Eclipse head units in our cars.

Speakers are whatever sounds good to you. I have Focals in the NSX, Noble and in our Allroad (Utopia, K2 power and K series respectively.) Maybe overkill for some.

Last option would be an in car computer and a screen. If you go with the screen, you have to make sure and get a transflective screen Advantages of the car computer would be full OBD2 monitoring with software and adapter, Navigation, Video, and music. Disadvantages is lack of integration with the main system. I have both setups and now use a Netbook for the incar computer with a monitor in the navpod.

I bought the complete nav unit YEARS ago with the thought of just having nav and keeping the OEM unit. Well years went by before i had it installed and and the alpine nav cd was severly outdated. I tried to find an updated cd and alpine wanted $400!:eek: The f90bt was 500. I purchased the f90 and wanted to get the nav part to go on the nav pod and everything else to go thru the DD unit. WELL, the f90 is not a dual zone unit and i couldn't find a dual zone HU that would let you separate the nav, cant even get my reverse camera up there. Dual zones only let you send video to another screen. SO maybe one day i'll go FI and get the HKS Camp setup. But for now i use my ipod touch for music and send video of top gear episodes to the nav pod to watch at C and C meets.:biggrin:

I think I am going to go with the In Dash Double Din and use the OEM speakers. I dont care if it doesnt sound amazing. I am more interested in the NAV and Bluetooth.

If you use the OEM speakers, then you have to run line level to them because they are self amplified. Removing them and replacing them with new speakers is pretty easy, couple hours of work and couple of hundred dollars.
 
IMO, the OEM speakers sound horrible. Will there be a huge improvement by only replacing the speakers and keeping the OEM HU?
 
You can use the OEM speakers, you just need to open them up and unplug the wires to the amp, and run seperate wires to the speaker, then splice into your OEM speaker wire harness and run your amps thru that.

Nothing beats the OEM sound BOSE. the speakers cant handle lots of power but it sounds amazing. the OEM head unit actually makes the car sound as good as it does.

the doors are mids the floor speaker is sub and the middle speaker is the highs, the head unit actually does all this,

so these guys put in after market amps, and wire it all and it sounds like crap using the OEM speakers that are not made to do Full range, they are for Mid range only.

and they wonder why it sounds bad.

now if you could find a full range speaker to fit into the OEM enclosure then you have your self a bad ass sounding system.

It has been done and there is improvement over stock but the head unit itself is quite poor. You will need to add an amplifier if you add aftermarket speakers since the head unit puts out line level only.

This combination will be helpful and you will find yourself thinking, so that is what a cymbal sounds like or the sound of the fingernails over an acoustic guitar. Replacing the head unit will then be like popping your ears.

It you want a full range speaker that will fit in the OEM enclosure, try the GALLO driver out of the A'Diva. It might sound better but still sound inferior since the Bose system is equalized for their speaker drivers.

Shawn, make sure you get a listen to some of ther aftermarket setups at XPO, I think that you will be pleasantly surprised.

The nav and bluetooth are both excellent on the pioneer f90BT. Not sure about the newer models, but after ti ugrades the software in nov 09. The unit has been very good. the nav seems to use one of my door speaker, the bluetooth uses both door speakers!!! what ever you go with upgrade the mic to a noise cancelling one. the one that came with the f90BT is not great when the car is rolling over 45 MPH. I am looking to upgrade the mic.
 
For someone who is not looking for audiophile sound quality, I think you will find the factory bose speakers with an aftermarket sub and deck will do just fine, personally I like my single din with the screen in nav pod since the viewing angle is better.

There is no real way to do this, the bose stuff is 2ohms and oddball size too
 
I am sure I will get a chance at NSXPO this year to hear some after market stuff. as I have aftermarket radio into an Alpine 2 channel to the OEM doors enclosures. and the rear channels of the aftermarket radio to the center speaker and a crossover to the oem sub,, I just put in this weekend, took out the Kickers that some dumb ass put in an just screwed it to the sheet metal. terrible install. but that was before my time with her ya know. putting everything back to OEM has been expensive. the OEM radio is so damn expensive its gotta be my last purchase with that part of the car.
