Looking a little thin on top

Looks like I may be going bald. :( My hair seems to be thinning up each side of my forehead. Also the entire front looks thin too. I know there was another thread on going bald here on Prime but I thought I would ask about personal experiences with hair growth products. Has anyone here had any success with any products? What where your experiences and which products did you try with or without results? Any tips?
Just seems to me if any one product worked really well there would be a lot less bald people in the world. I am wondering should I just bow my bald head and accept going bald and be happy I lived long enough to go bald or is there anything I can try that will really work.

There was some thinning for a while but it seems to really pick up speed over the last year or so. How long did it take for you to notice thinning on your head before you where Kojack?

Thanks in advance,
Bald in NY :frown:

hmmm... Start rogaine (mynoxidil) or propecia ASAP. It'll retard the current hair-loss & possibly foment new re-growth.

If the alopecia (hair loss) was somewhat sudden, look into your diet & nutrition, stress level, overall health (a physical & usual blood-workup), activity/fitness, water source, grooming products used, recent medications, etc.

Buildup of DHT/DHEA, a breakdown product of testosterone when we age, I believe hastens hair-loss typically. It 'suffocates' & blocks the follicle from getting nutrients & proper bloodflow. Using an natural oil (almond, olive, coconut, etc...), gently massage your scalp w/ your fingertips prior to showering. This increases circulation in the scalp & toxins/etc are flushed out. Avoid wearing restrictive hats/caps as well.

Yes, I don't try to look at my hairbrush & sink/shower drain in past year or so either... :frown:

May god be w/ you, my friend.

Alot depends on your age IMO. I've seen people start losing their hair in their late teens early twenties and be bald by 30. I also work with people that are thinning, but are 40 years old and will probably never be "fully bald".

It's all good man things can be alot worse than that. I take being bald over cancer etc anyday.

Propecia and Rogaine that's all that is proven.

Saw part 1 of a 2 part CNBC documentary on hair loss products. They had 6 guys use a variety of different products, from the two common drugs mentioned above, to laser combs and one guy got a hair transplant. It's probably no big surprise that after 6 months, only the hair transplant looked dramatically better. Ironically the laser comb thing apparenly was the next best, followed by the drugs and the then other dud devices (forget what they were though, sorry). Haven't seen part 2 yet. Anybody else see this?

I have an out of town buddy that I saw a few years ago on a trip to Vegas. He was very thin on the top of his head in the front. Two years later I saw him again in Vegas for our semi-annual fellas only trip and he had a FULL head of hair. I asked him what he used to grow his hair back and he said Propecia. It costs $66 per month, but if you have results like that, then it would be worth it. I have heard of other people taking it with little results too though, but I have seen it work first hand.

Just FYI but Rogain shows on the bottle that it will not work on the sides allong the forehead, only at the top/middle.

My Solution:

Shave it once a week with a razor in the shower. I don't think I'll ever go back.

I'm not far enough along to shave yet it just looks a little thin. At this point if I just hang out with people who are more vertically challanged than I am no one will notice.

I am not so sure the shaved head look would work for me. Couple of car wreck scars up there.

Nice bike BTW

Be forwarned that Propecia will make your sex drive plummet... I decided that some side effects weren't worth the minimal benefit, especially for $66/mo for what amounted to vanity.

I have used Propecia for years and ut has worked for me. My wife noticed I was getting thin on top. I went to the Dr. & got Propecia since then the thinning has filled in and I have no more hair loss. The product does say that in about 80% you just won't loose more hair and in about 5% hair will grow back and the other 15% won't get any benefit.

For those that use propecia I have a helpful hint. Propecia is just a 1% Proscor. Proscor is a 5% tablet for prostrate problems. Proscor costs about $85 for 1 month but you can cut into 4ths giving you 4 months for $85 instead of about $56/month for propecia.

Who gave you the info that they are interchangeable and how do you know there isn't anything else in the Propecia that is necessary?

Not necessarily true and have read that it is a side effect for only a small percentage.

I sell employee benefits and many of my clients are Physicians. One of my Physician clients was the person that told me about the proscor. I haven't seen any sexual side effects. You can ask my wife, I stay horny.

I too tried Propecia and did get results but I changed my mind about taking a pill for the rest of my handsome life and went out to Walmart and picked up a set of clippers for $15.00. Thats $15.00 a year or two for haircuts, thats it. I just set the clippers on the first setting, one, and every friday at the gym I trim on down, I even shave that day as well, even if I dont need too.
Hey, its friday today, better get to the gym to get things done!!!

My family and (then) girlfriend thought I was nuts when I started shaving my head back in High School (I was an avid swimmer, water polo player, surfer). I had a very, very, very thick head of hair at the time.

I liked the look and here I am going on 17 years later and I'm still shaving my head.

Ironically (and yes, it's not unlike the Seinfeld episode) some 15 years later, girlfriend is long since gone, wife only knows me with shaved head basically, I take a two week trip to see the wife's family back in NYC. I decide to get lazy and not shave. I notice that my hair isn't growing back as well in some spots (receding hairline)! Wow! I was shocked.

Good thing I'm naturally tan, and I have a nice shaped head.

BTW - the avatar isn't me but it really, really looks like me.

My advice to you Steve - don't sweat it. Drugs and all that crap only have side effects and you'll spend more time worrying about something that at the end of the day you can't control. Never mind the money you'll spend.

I haven't paid for a haircut or shampoo in nearly two decades. I bought a really good electric razor (I use this M-F) and a set of really good Mach III (special business appt. or event with the wife) and I never have to worry about hat head or my hair being mussed when I take the roof panel off the NSX.

Be careful with cutting those pills. Propecia and Proscar are coated tablets. They both contain a medication called finasteride which is a steroid and, like all steroids, can be absorbed through the skin. The coating prevents this. For you it is not a problem, but if a pregnant woman handles the tablets, it can cause birth defects. In particular, it can cause a male fetus to develop as female ala Jamie Curtis.

Here is the answer from a doctor. Propecia and Proscar are two different preparations of the same medication Finasteride. The reason that Propecia came out is that many people on Proscar were found to be growing hair. So hair growing is actually a side effect. Most of my patients taking Finasteride use a quarter of a 5mg pill a day because it is cheaper that way. Propecia is 1mg.

Just do what I do. Wear a hat. I was at my inlaws the other day after just getting a hair cut. My father in law commented out of the blue that it looked like I was getting a little thin on top. I kind of threw me off guard. I hadn't had anyone say that to me before.

Yes, but I was part of that small percentage... :frown:
