Hey guys, im currently residing in south florida (miami) but i have always enjoyed myself in Norcal. I have been a couple of times over the past few years and always said to myself i would like to live here

What are you guys thoughts? I know places always seem better when on "vacation" but I have been to A LOT of places and I really like north cali.
How do you guys enjoy living up there?

It's great. The Bay Area is one of the nicest places to live in the USA in my opinion. I would say San Diego would be my 2nd choice. But its definitely pricey here but you might be used to that coming from Miami. The weather is excellent. No humidity!

What makes living in Northern California great is because Dhalsim aka as the owner of 'The Nicest NSX in the Bay Area' resides here.

You must mean Jeremiah.........he has "The nicest NSX in the Bay Area" and the trophy to prove it......................

Although I don't live in Norcal, but visit it a lot for work, don't forget to consider the traffic, expensive real estate and the state of CA trying to screw you for vehicle registration and mods. :) Weather is great and I would move there if the above was more in control :)

Yes, before you move, get a UPS store box wherever you currently live and keep your cars registered there... trust me, it will make your life a lot easier.

Weather is priceless.

Traffic isn't that bad when you make good $$$$ and don't live in those areas....

Expensive real estate is offset buy higher COLA and ESPP

I live in the best school district in Portland, OR and even COLA is not getting me anywhere near 300% + higher real estate, my friend :)

My friend, my school, Oak Avenue Elementary: API increased from 983 in 2012 to 984 in 2013.

My rental income for the main house 3/3 and cottage 2/1 (both have a 2 car garage and kitchen) is north of $7k/month.

Sure real estate prices are higher, but I can also charge more for rent and my 'hood of 94024 was basically 2008 proof.

So why's that?

My 'hood is surrounded by high net worth employees of Apple, Intel, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and just about anything that matters in high tech.

And right next door is....... http://www.stanford.edu/

You are definitely well of and I am one of those high net-worth Intel employees (that you speak of) that cannot afford to move to Bay area :). I talk to the ones that moved from OR to there and the outlook is not so great. Anyways, I won't hijack this thread anymore. :)

We've been in the Bay Area for 24 years (moved here from New England). We like it here — the weather is certainly warmer, and the scenery is beautiful. The food is good. When our son was in school, we thought the schools were okay, but not extraordinary.

But we don't love the Bay Area. We'd much rather live near Boston than San Francisco, or be in SoCal.

However, this is where the job is. So we are here. I don't see us staying here forever.

Schools in the Bay Area are all over the place on API scores, etc.

There is a VERY strong association with the students racial and cultural demographics and the API scores.

Not sure if OP even asked about schools, but FWIW I went here and really can't complain...

That's right, Silicon Valley born and raised over here. Slightly biased source ;-)

I know someone who just moved here from north Florida, Tallahassee area. I know that's very different from SoFla/Miami, but he is having a bit of trouble adjusting to the sprawling nature of the peninsula and south bay area. I guess things are a little more spread out and have more empty space in between them where he's from, but a quick trip to Google Maps will show you that our towns are just all slammed right up against each other.

However, you can live somewhere that feels far away but is pretty reasonable to commute from, if you get yourself some property up in the Santa Cruz mountains. For the totally dense urban vibe, outside of San Francisco there's Palo Alto, Mountain View, Campbell and even San Jose that have slightly developed "downtown" areas - maybe a little quieter at night if that's your preference.

The State of California is very much aware of this and looking for violaters.

http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/20...-report-out-of-state-car-registration-cheats/

The CHP is reminding the public of a feature on their website calledCHEATERS, short for “Californians Help Eliminate All The Evasive Registration Scofflaws.” Residents can enter an offending driver’s information, and the Highway Patrol tracks them down.
Last year, the CHEATERS website helped bring in three quarters of a million dollars in registration fees.
“Most of the people in California, the vast, vast majority of them, are good upstanding people. They contribute and pay their registration, and they expect the same from the other people on the roadway,” Niemeth said.
According to authorities, the fine for not registering a car in California is around $400.

Bash all you want, it got me more connections to powerful Silicon Valley people (on account of going to school with their kids) than my university ever did...
