I'll be getting new tires next year. The tire shop that I've used in the past (NTB) lifts the car by driving it over a lift that uses wide rubber pads that run the length of the sill plates below the doors. They lift the car about a foot off the ground. My question is: Is this a safe way to lift the car, or should I insist that they use a hand jack on the center jack point and do one side of the car at a time?

Well the pads are soft enough not to mar to imprint the aluminum under the car, and are large enough to disperse the load.
There are no brake lines running underneath the car, as they are ran inside the car underneath the carpeting, so i would vote for it being ok.

They should be able to position the lift so that it is underneath the jacking points (the tabs that stick out below the rocker panels) and makes contact there. (There are three per side, and they should make sure they make contact either on the center one or on the two end ones.) As long as they do this, it should be fine.
