Laguna Seca HPDE Aug 21-23

Hey Ryneen......didnt we meet at Buttonwillow last year?

I would love to attend this event but I was a little put off by the High-Intermediate and advanced group only and that the H-I group is already crowded.

I guess I will be attending Thunderhill events for a while.

Anyone know who the instructor with the Black NSX (Karl) is at Unlimited Laps event on June 19th?

Have fun at Laguna

Not to mention 35 cars packed into one run group (too much testosterone):frown:

Yes, we did meet at Buttonwillow. How have you been?
I live in LA and seldom get the opportunity to run Laguna Seca, so I'm ok with crowded run groups for this event.
Hopefully we'll see you next time.

Hi Ryneen,

Just a few questions....do you get or have had your car serviced by Autowave? And are you running 17"s all the way around and have the Comptech Headers and Taitec Exhaust combo?

Hello Tony,
Yes, that's me. I have my car at Autowave quite often. I just picked it up two weeks ago from having Autowave install the JDM short gears and 4.23 final drive along with a re-shimmed diff. The car is so much quicker at Big Willow (Just cut 2 seconds from my time). Do you have your car maintained at Autowave?

Are you thinking of heading to Laguna Seca? I have two freinds bringing their cars.

Yes I do....and also with Ramon at Niguel Motors. I'm going to do the Streets of Willow July 31st....first time out on a track. Just wanted to know how your car is set up....suspension, sway bars, tires, brakes and pads? I was there at Autowave about 3 or 4yrs ago when you were picking up your car and I couldn't believe how great it sounded. Shane told me what you had and that you tracked the car alot. So I got the same headers and exhaust....and have got nothing but compliments from so many people....thanks to you. You still have test pipes....right? Hopefully someday we can meet up at one of the tracks....so I can try and follow you. When is Laguna Seca?

Thanks,

Tony

Hello Tony,
Good to hear you're digging your exhaust. Yes, I'm still running test pipes with the Comptech header and Taitech GT Lightweight exhaust. I get a lot of compliments especially when I'm at the track.

Great to hear you're going to the track. I've been doing it about 5-6 years but have only been about 20-30 times. The biggest piece of advise I can give you is to have a professional instructor in your car as often as possible. My ignorance for the first two years prevented me from getting proffesional coaching and it held me back. I now get help everytime I can. There are a lot of good instructors. The best I've had is Billy Johnson and Erik Messley. They're magicians behind the wheel and even better as a coach/instructor (not all fast guys can coach). If you're not familiar with them, google them for a bio and let me know if you need their contact info. Another bit of advise would be to get a track freindly alignment from Erik Messley who has a shop near Autowave.

I'll be out of town on July 31st. Have a great time at the Streets of Willow and try to go to Laguna Seca on Aug 21-23 if you can. I think there are still some openings.

Hey Ryan

A bunch of my friends are heading up to Laguna Seca for Aug 22 (1 day only). My friend Rich was able to tell Speedventures we have a large group of 5-7 cars signing up before July 6th.

For doing so Speedventures will give us a "discount code" worth $20 a day. As a fellow NSX'er, you're free to use our code and get the discount with our group (it'll pay for fuel or lunch, etc ).

Email me at [email protected] and i'll forward you the code. If you already signed up just email or call Aaron Bitterman to work out the discount, after i give you the code.

I see you're going 2 days so that $40 savings

Anyone else who wants it for the Aug 21-23 event is welcome to it so email me as i'm not allowed post it on forums.

I'm heading up from Irvine, what day and what area are you leaving from?

Cheers,
Ed

This looks really tempting. I've taken three Skip Barber courses at Laguna Seca (3-day racing school, 1-day car control clinic, and 2-day high performance driving school) and love driving the course.

My NSX is pretty much completely stock -- does anyone know if that creates any problems driving in these events? Are most other cars modified?

hey PLZ

With 3 days skip barber at Laguna Seca in your pocket you already have more experience at this track than i do. i've only been at Laguna 2 years ago for a 1 day event and its by far the best course on the west coast.

my nsx is lightly moded so i don't think there's much difference over stock. if you have good grippy tires and decent brake pads you should be ok. Altho, you'll feel underpowered on the uphill straits (i know i do).

hopefully we'll see you there.

I just got the short gears and 4.23 final drive installed by Autowave. I had it out at Willowsprings Raceway (big track) three weeks ago and beat my best laptime by 2 seconds. It feels like it has another 50+ HP, especially the uphill section in turn 3/4. I'm interested in how the lower gears are going to feel going up 5/6 at Laguna. Should be quite a bit quicker.

Ryan,

I have the exact same set up with short gears and 4.23 and yes... that mod alone was well worth the money. Altho about 2 months ago, my 2nd gear had issues so i swapped with a stock 2nd gear. i regret that choice:frown:

Ryan

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? Mine is pretty loud (about 105db WOT) and i'm worried about the 92db noise limit. How are you getting around that problem?

Ed

I have Comptech headers, Taitec GTLW exhaust and no cats. My car is LOUD. Therefore I'm going to put my stock exhaust on before the event. I did this last year and it was fine. The headers and no cats was not an issue with the stock exhaust.

You have the USDM 2nd gear on the JDM gear stack?

Yes. The car was at a dealer and they said they could NOT get only the 2nd NSX-R short gear. I have a good relationship with my service guy so i believed him and allowed him to get an OEM 2nd gear. After it was done, i realized i wasn't happy with the set up (sluggish acceleration), so I called around and found out that I could get only the NSX Type R 2nd gear alone. grrrrrrr .... anyhow, i need a new clutch in a few months so i'll probably swap out with the "correct" short gear at that time.

I hope others don't do what I did. the 2nd & 3rd short gears are the funnest out of all the NSX-R short gears.

Read the article -more specifically the gear ratios/speeds on page 2:

http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArtic...t-One-Building-the-Bulletproof-Transaxle.aspx

Having the Short gear stack with the US 2nd gear, the 1-2 shift is identical to the US gear stack (because the "Short Gears" only affect 2-3-4th gear). While not feeling as good as the normal short gear set, your JDM + US 2nd gear is still better than the US gear set.

hey billy

great article. but i'm looking forward to getting back the NSX-R 2nd gear in a couple of months. since i'm getting that done is there any recommendation that i should consider upgrading while Autowave is working on the tranny? I already have a light flywheel and 4.23 final drive. Oh, i'm considering a new clutch. what do you have in your NSX?

btw, I saw your video link on streetfire.net. great tips on your video. i'll put them to use for Laguna.

Ed

How many people from Prime are going?
I'll see you on Saturday and/or Sunday!

Autowave is putting on my stock exhaust now so I can pass sound. I'm hoping I don't need to put my cats back in also.
