Keyless entry-very short range?

I have a '91 with the stock keyless entry/alarm. It seems I have to be right up next to the door in order to unlock the system. The batteries are new and the system works fine otherwise. Anyone, any thoughts or similar experiences?

I've noticed the same thing with my keyless entry. But, I just realized, it may be because of the cover on the remote. Is the cover on your remote? If so, try it without the cover.

The leather cover should not have that much of an effect on the RF remote control, most likely the antenna on the Keyless Entry Module is wadded up or worse yet wrapped around other wires when installed, go through the installation instructions to locate the module and check to see if the antenna is straight and not near any other wires or metal. The range of the remote is not what I would call great but mine will work from about 50 - 75 ft away from the car. One other thing that will reduce your range is if you had your windows tinted with a metalized film. I would bet money on the install.

I had the same thing happen to my 91, I would have to press the remote against the glass and *pray* it worked. If there seemed to be any nearby RF interference, I had to use the old fashioned key to unlock the door.

New batteries solved nothing.

Casual examination of the system innards showed no obvious problem, messing with connectors or the antenna did nothing useful either.

Purchase of a completely new keyless entry system DID solve the problem (about 4-5 years ago), but they are not available anymore. I retained the original wiring harness, so that was unlikely to be the problem too.

I recommend that you contact Kenwood and see if they can help.

[EDIT]: Kenwood was the OEM for the keyless entry.

On second thought, I would ship the unit to BrianK and have him work his magic on it...caps dry out and there is probably one in the RF loop.

No tint on the windows. I'll check the antenna next. Did Kenwood manufacture the system for honda? Gary
