K&N filter cleaning schedule?

I have the same question myself since my Gruppe M air filter uses the same filter material as K&N.

The "service interval" in K&N's web site doesn't specify a number of miles or a timespan between cleanings. However when comparing their filters to paper ones, they use a cleaning figure of every 40,000 miles as a typical example. Later on in that document, they come closer to making a definite recommendation: "We recommend inspecting the filter every 20,000 street driven miles or every 3 months of severe
use."

Considering that few NSX's are driven 20,000 miles a year or under severe (i.e. dirty) use, I would guess it's safe for most to go several years or more between cleanings.

I've put 10,000 miles on my air filter and visually it doesn't look any different than when it was new.

I use a K&N Cone filter in my Eclipse, and I cleaned it out after approximately 3-4 months of use. To tell the truth, the air conditioning started to stank from it, so I knew it was time.

I gave mine a healthy cleaning, let it dry off in the shade, and now its running fine again.

So, I'd agree with the 20k miles or 3 month rule. But, should you forget, maybe you'll be lucky enough to get the warning smell

Well mine is a cone filter than replaces the OEM airbox completely... The engine bay or other parts near the cone doesn't really get very dirty in general. Thats why I was wondering if other people with cone type filters even actually clean/change their filters at all.

The smell that comes through A/C is usually mold that accumulates on the A/C unit itself, not on the air filter. Common problem for ALL cars...

My RM Cone Filter requires cleaning once a month. Otherwise it is black from dirt and grime.
My old K&N unit only needed it after about 4 months/5K miles.

All you have to do is clean it once to convince yourself that you don't clean it often enough. I only had about 10K on mine, and it looked fairly clean, but when I saw all the crap that came out of it I put myself on a more frequent schedule.
