Reading the Tires/Wheels section of this site, I found out that MOST people who buy aftermarket wheels "choose" to have a lip of some sort, from small ones to really deep ones.

As my research would show, MOST of the supercars out there come with NO LIPS on their wheels coming out of the factory...sure most of them have staggered fitments with wider rear tires than front, but again, the "LIPS" are usually not there.

Is there an advantage to having LIPS on wheels other than wider tires and cosmetics??

Please enlighten me.

Thanks
Mike

Shouldnt this be in the wheel forum? And how would a lip on a wheel "offer better performance??"

I guess it should..I thought maybe it was more "GENERAL" than specific wheel question...to the mods, please move it if it makes more sense in that forum.

I didn't do the vote on the poll as both of the options are a little extreme.

while I agree big fat lips on the rear is sexy, yet, I had seen some really dinged up/ bent lip... so it really depends on what kind of material they used.

Performance wise, provide the wheel having the same offset and the width, I don't see there's any huge difference with a lip or not... (somebody please correct me, I guess the ideal wheel is that the hub mounting area and the spokes where it meets the "rim" that they were closed to the wheel's center??

I didn't vote in the poll as I don't necessarily agree with either option in their entirety.

However, to answer your thread title.......Lips = YES! :D

I'm under the impression that the lip actually adds to the aerodynamic drag. If you look at all cars running on the Salt Flats that are doing 200mph+, the wheels are all flat and flush. I personally don't do 200mph runs often, even at all, for that matter and I have it strictly for the look. Yes you heard me, I did it for no other reason but for Cosmetics.
