Taken from here:

It's astounding that until this moment, three years after the iPhone, the biggest software company in the world basically didn't compete in mobile. Windows Phone 7 Series is more than the Microsoft smartphone we've been waiting for. Everything's different now.

Today, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft is publicly previewing Windows Phone 7 for the first time. The brand new, totally fresh operating system will appear in phones this year, but not until the holidays. All of the major wireless carriers and every likely hardware maker are backing it, and they'd be stupid not to. It's awesome. Further details are forthcoming, but here is what you need to know:

The name—Windows Phone 7 Series—is a mouthful, and unfortunately, the epitome of Microsoft's worst naming instincts, belying the simple fact that it's the most groundbreaking phone since the iPhone. It's the phone Microsoft should've made three years ago. In the same way that the Windows 7 desktop OS was nearly everything people hoped it would be, Windows Phone 7 is almost everything anyone could've dreamed of in a phone, let alone a Microsoft phone. It changes everything. Why? Now that Microsoft has filled in its gaping chasm of suck with a meaningful phone effort, the three most significant companies in desktop computing—Apple, Google and Microsoft—now stand to occupy the same positions in mobile. Phones are officially computers that happen to fit in your pocket.

Windows Phone 7 is also something completely new for Microsoft: A total break from the past. Windows Mobile isn't just dead, the body's been dumped, buried and paved over by a rainbow brick road.

Microsoft has filled in its gaping chasm of suck with...

Nothing yet.

Virtually every Microsoft product they've ever put out has been prematurely released and contained a freakish number of undocumented problems. The only good thing about this is that they're unleashing it on Spaniards first instead of in their own backyard.

I'd bet a nickel that this turns out to be a completely fouled up mess within 30 days of it's being foisted on the public. A year or two later Microsoft will have their half baked OS mostly sorted but by then it will be ready to release their next steaming pile, hopefully at another obscure venue.

That has got to be the lamest video ever. I mean even if it wasn't a marketing ad they should always be marketing! I fell asleep while watching it. feature this feature that, no one cares they should get people excited about it.

Yawn...

I could see MS getting sued as this is essentially Motorola's MotoBlur software premise. Wow...windows 7 new? or copied

Oh noes, it doesn't have Flash!

I saw where the Nexus One is getting flash. Adobe is almost done developing it they said and will push it out when done.
They showed a demo of the nexus one playing games on flash videogame sites.

I love my windows phone (touch pro 2) and so needless to say I am very interested with the win 7 phone but I don't know if I can give up the physical keyboard of my touch pro.

Well, at least Win 7 seems to provide a more consistent and validated experience than the Google phones. And I do have to give some props to MSFT for at least coming up with their own UI design instead of copying someone else's prior design.

It may be too little too late though.

Just looking at the pics. Looks like a big joke to me.
Big huge blocks? Seriously? lol. I think Microsoft is targeting Palm. I'm sure they're beat them though. Watch out palm.

Agreed on the very nice and consistent and original user experience. This is something I would consider buying over the current Android phones. Sure it's got rough edges, but so did every other version 1 phone. I think it's off to a great start, and I'm no MS fan.

I've not yet played with Win 7 phone but it seems to me that the amount of UI information displayed on the screen at any given time is awfully sparse.

In other words, there's only a few actionable or clickable things on the screen at once - with a lot of dead space. This is because of the big tiles and big words of the UI. Will you be swiping and swiping forever to find the thing you're looking for?

The FaceBook centric approach is interesting and I think you'll see similar functionality on the iOS and Android devices soon.

Hardware? We've seen the hardware before. Nothing interesting there.

The Win 7 phone will appeal to hardcore MSFT users and take some market share from Android and maybe Nokia - just because MSFT is selling it thru multiple carriers. I don't see BB users switching to this and neither would iPhone users.

Microsoft's tight design rules require all Windows Phone 7 devices to have a pretty nice camera on them; they must tout at least 5 megapixels and video capture to boot. Unfortunately, Redmond's new phone operating system has limitations that mean developers can't fully take advantage of the lenses.

Although Windows Phone 7 devices can record and upload video and pictures, application developers can't fully take advantage of those image sensors to do other fun things like video chat and augmented reality.

That means that not only will Windows Phone 7 not have as many apps as Android-based phones or the iPhone when the first devices go on sale in the U.S. next month, but there will also be whole classes of programs that we just won't see--at least for this version of Windows Phone

More crappiness from WP7 - Windows Phone 7 limits camera access for apps.

There is no side-loading of apps unlike Android. You can ONLY buy apps and install apps that Microsoft deems appropriate from their app store.

There is no external storage microSD card that you can use.

No copying / multi-tasking.

The UI looks like a dog barfed it up.

Yea for WP7.... not... :frown:

Your objectivity is hilarious. It will take some market share from Android but not iPhone, what kind of reasoning is that?

These phones are not for the power user but they will meet a market segment if it's priced right. Microsoft knew releasing this they were well behind Google and Apple. But if they can get this into the hands of the people that are buying the cheap touchscreen phones that run the manufacturer OS, then they can build on that. It also seems to be a good phone for old people with the huge tiles and simplicity. But this phone was not meant to kill iOS or Android right away.

Any phone with Netflix is a plus for me. If Android would stop slacking and get the streaming Netflix app i would extra happy. Im using Android on my HTC HD2 and with this screen its the only thing missing lol. Good thing i get a free iPhone thru work to use so i get the best of both worlds
