Is this possible / Has it been done before? Fog Light = Head Lights

Has anyone heard of or seen a member or anyone else with a flip up headlight NSX utilize the Fog Light space and retrofit a pair of HIDs or any other set up that can provide or replicate the long range luminous effect of regular headlights?

The thought here would be to be able to use your NSX at night without ever having to use your flip up lights.

Look forward to any answer or response.

What would be purpose of it? I'm just wondering,. The headlights provide plenty of light, and people are already running HID in them. I think it would look odd with just the fog on as your main headlight lighting. But I guess to each its own I suppose.

I think the angle of the beam would be way too low to hit the road and get light where you need it.
Could be bad for on coming drivers.

Would you hike around with a flashlight tied to your shoes?

And I believe it is too low for DOT rules.

Before we get too far down this discussion, let's all agree what we're talking about. Here's picture showing the different beam patterns of different types of automotive lighting systems:

Note that the foglight beam pattern is low, wide and very dispersed. Not ideal for using as headlights.
From the pictures it looks like chudson1549 had the PIAA 1000 "driving lights" installed on his car. That beam pattern is much more narrow and generally shoots further (depending on how they're aimed). While still not ideal for headlights, its better at lighting up further down the road at night.

I'm not saying I would do it myself, but I did have a pair of driving lights, not fog lights on my old Acura Legend that I did use on occasion as headlights and it provided adequate light output. Today with the ability to put HID's in a driving light housing I think it is doable. Not sure if its advisable, but doable. Now the driving lights I had looked liked your typical fog light housing, but it had the long driving beam pattern and not the shallow wide fog light pattern.

With the lights that low in the bumper though I would think the cops might hassle you.

Just remember to wire the taillights into that new headlight circuit.

Basically I was getting at whether or not the light pattern could be replicated from that angle. Its more of a question relating to the art of the possible, vs. rather or not its practical.

I think it is absolutely possible. There are similar conversion kits for FD3S RX-7s in which the bumper-mounted lights are installed with headlight/projector assemblies. If I recall, this was how the BMW 8-series was as well. The flip up lights then become auxiliary.
