Ok it's opinion time... It's 40 degrees here today and climbing. We are supposed to hit 50 by friday. No snow in the forecast. I haven't driven the car since October 1st and am really wanting to take it out. Last year I broke down and drove the 996 mid winter on a dry day but I have been waaaaaaaaaaay more particualer about the NSX. Am I too early?? Midwesterers, what do you think? When is everyone else taking out their cars? Tia

What is the reason that you keep your car stored?

If you don't want to bring it out because of salt on the roads, then leave it inside. There's still plenty of salt around. Go for a drive and your car will be covered with the powder.

If you don't want to bring it out because it might snow again, well, it can snow any month of the year. So drive it if you like.

If you don't want to bring it out because you still have the insurance turned off, when do you turn it back on? Does it need to be warm out? Normal high temperatures are around 45 degrees F now, will be around 52 by the end of the month. Your decision.

If you don't want to bring it out until your first track event of the year, check your track schedule. Track events around here generally get going in April.

If you don't want to bring it out because you don't have winter tires for it... wait, you work at Tire Rack, you probably have twelve different sets of tires for yours.

Your choice...

(I take mine out a couple of weeks before the first track event I do in it, when I take it in for service. I will probably wait another 2-3 weeks before swapping off the winter tires from my daily driver ITR.)

Drive mine every week that the pavement is dry regardless of temp. I let it warm up for 10-15 min. in the garage first and hand wash the salt off of it after every winter
drive as long as the temp is >30. (Now Junior its not polite to point at the crazy man) I'll definately have both the N and the S (S2000) out this weekend (top down if >40.)

Greetings from the Mid-West. Im looking forward to washing the NSX in shorts and a T-shirt this weekend- hell its supposed to hit 50. Ive gotten it out every couple of weeks thorougout this winter...these last 4 mos really make ya appreciate the summer.

80 degrees and blue sky in Vegas, took the car for a 110 mile trip to Lake Mead and Valley of Fire today, i love the desert!

It's supposed to be in the sixties here, both Saturday and Sunday. Nice change from breaking the record low yesterday at 3 degrees F.

Actually, this winter has seen very little snowfall here. We had three months (after December 2) without so much as a 3-inch snow. The only white powder we've seen for most of the winter is salt. We're not used to seeing bare ground here for the entire months of January and February. Global warming I guess (but I don't think the folks in the Northeast would agree)...

Couldn't have said it better myself. This whole storage thing is grossly overrated. Had mine in on the lift for an oil change last week and after two winters as a daily driver, the only rust I could find was on the OEM exhaust. I'm secretly hoping it'll rust through soon so I'll be able to justify one of those new stainless combo's that everyone raves about

Let's take another perspective.....

I pay $407 a year for my registration ,but I drive it all the time..another Californian.
We get 11 months of sunshine throughout the year...is $407 worth it? Heck yeah.

Let's see...consider the price you've paid to buy your NSX divided by the number of days you actually drive it, so how much do you pay for each drive?

Let's take a simple calculation. Let's say you pay $1000 each month (payments + insurance), that's about $33/day if you drive everyday. If you drive once a week, that's about $250/day and so on.

Now is $407 a year for registration a problem? Heck NO!!

If I don't drive it as much, I might as well just rent one every time I feel like driving it. It'll probably cost less......

Every place you can live has its pluses and minuses. Sunshine. Low housing prices. Low taxes. Not much traffic on the highways. Culture (museums, theaters, etc). Great restaurants. Good schools if you have kids. Etc - You get the idea.

No place is perfect in every respect. But you can find the place that best suits your own needs and preferences. Find it, live there, and enjoy it.

Just don't think that everyone who lives somewhere else is a fool because they don't live where you do. The fact is, they probably live elsewhere because that's the place that best meets their needs and desires. And there are probably just as many people who live elsewhere who think you're a fool for putting up with something you put up with where you live.

Each to his own taste.

I'm certainly not trying to convince people that I'm living in the ideal place (in fact there are only two kinds of people who live here .. those who haven't lived through a winter so they don't know any better; and those who have lived through a winter and froze their brain and don't know any better).

And I fully understand that there are some people who might not want to risk damaging their finishes by driving when there is added sand/salt on the roads (although arguably it may not be that much worse than tracking it).

What I do want people to know is that the car is built to take much colder conditions than 95% of you will ever subject it to and it will do so with less stress than you'll subject it to by tracking it. I just don't want people to be using that as an excuse not to enjoy it more. (note: driving in snow/ice requires add'l considerations/caution but also shouldn't be considered a show stopper)

Cool, thanks for the advice guys. Here in South Bend Indiana, we have had much more snow than Chicago (about 10 times the amount!) even though we are only 2 hours away. I think I'm going to pull the car out on Friday when I warms up here

thanks for the advice,
Aaron
