I don't have an iPod and haven't used one much, but my wife recently got one. Does anyone know if there is a way to put music on the iPod and not have to keep it on my computer's hard drive? My computer is old and it's hard drive is smaller than the iPod's and is filling up fast. I tried doing it once before. I deleted the songs on the hard drive and then the next time my wife plugged in her iPod, it updated itself, but there were no songs. So it basically deleted the songs off of the iPod itself. Can someone walk me through this step by step? Thanks in advance.

plug in the iPod, open itunes, and then change the update settings to "manual"
now, when you want to add something new to the ipod, just drag & drop. It won't remove songs from the ipod that you've taken off the computer now.

Honestly, if you are going to be getting a lot of music and the Ipod is bigger, then its time for new computer.
You can get a Dell 2.4 Celeron with 80gig hard drive for $350. Which is fine for basic home computer needs.

Another option is:
I use an old laptop with a small hard drive for all my "music" and Ipod needs. I purchased an external 320gb firewire/USB hard drive for $180. It holds all of my music and then some.

I plan on buying a new computer some time in the future. I'm on a computer all day at work, so the computer at home doesn't get used much. If I could, I would just load iTunes at work and do everything there, but it's work's computer so I can't.
