I picked up a spiffy $100 Canton oil filter this weekend and I noticed the following.
  • The recommended street us was 15,000 miles.
  • The recommended track use was... wait for it.. 750 miles

A factor of 20X!

This would seem to indicate that for those that change their oil and filter before and after a HPDE day are doing very well.

At the very least, I think this indicates how much faster things wear down when you're bouncing off 8000 RPM for hours on straight.

Just food for thought....

Just to play devil's advocate, that mileage difference could be a marketing ploy. Think about it. The average (non-tracking) car-nut will be impressed by the 15,000 mileage limit and will pony up $100 for it. The average track guy, will also be impressed by a $100 filter, and, since they are already prepared to burn some dough for their addiction, changing the oil filter very frequently (with the $100 best) is not much in the whole scheme of things.

You could have the same marketing tactic with synthetic oil.

That $100 oil filter might be as tight as grammas panties, but I'll still just change the Mobil 1 & OEM filter every 3000 or so miles.

I don't think so. The filter elements are swappable and they are $15.00. It's not like thy sell you a new $100 filter every time.

I think they really stand behind their quality, they warranty parts if they fail when used under proper guidelines.

They wouldn't say 15K unless they knew for a fact, and they wouldn't say 750 miles, I think if that wasn't always true. However 750 track miles is a eck of a lot. They really say, change the filter only every other, or every other, other time under normal street use.

I use the Canton filter on my race car mainly because it filters all of the oil all of the time and never goes into bypass, especially on start up. We use these type (Canton) on all of our service generators for our Northwest plants per the directions of our in house oil analysis specialists (all STLE certified). Typically your oil is not worn out at this time frame (3000- 10,000 miles) it is just full of contaminants (ferrous and non-ferrous) and we have been testing oil for at least the last 17 years I have been part of the CBM crew at my company. The tribologist (lookin over my shoulder as I write this) has taught me more about lubricants in the last 17 years than I can remember but what you have selected is one heck of a good filter and the elements are relatively inexpensive as you have mentioned. These are quality products and you will have your oil filtered all of the time and as my friend is smacking the back of my head for not having one on my NSX I will be ordering one for my car tonight, and not because he is hitting me upside the head LOL, but becuase he is right!

The short one, and it was plenty big. The long one, I do'nt think will clear the suspension brace, or be very very tight.

You need the Canton 22 MM one, P/N: CAN25-292
I bought it from HRP:

The cool thing is that the filters are swappable and you can see them before throwing it out. May help in determining the type of change intervals you want or if you see large chunks of metalic pieces, you know you're in trouble before the engine starts rattling or throws a pistong.

$13.00 for an excellent filter element that doesn't have bypass valve, is good. I'm sure I'll be able to run it for 1.5-2.0+ in normal driving than the regular OEM.

Placebo, delusion or just flaky OEM oil pressure gauge, but my oil pressure seems to be reading 1/2-1 bar higher while driving around now.... and I did not change the oil.
