The middle ground I was getting at was to run the very advanced and complete software from the stock ECU on a much more capable and expandable hardware platform.


The issue with the standalone aftermarket ECUs is that you're basically starting from scratch and rebuilding the entire engine model with fewer sensor inputs and less testing. The stock ECU's software and mappings were developed with thousands of hours of testing the car under a much bigger range of conditions. Imagine if that could be your starting point, without the ROM space limitations of 1991.
