Hey Everyone,

I have been in Minnesota for about 4 months now on a pseudo vacation (I will be coming back to Los Angeles soon). I've taken a job as an auto detailer for an auto auction. In one of the cars I was working on I found an ad for a local detail shop. For the same service that my shop provided, the ad was quoting $200.00 price tag. I'm sure the price is set that high to account or overhead, business tax etc... but I'm not sure the job is actually worth that much.

It takes me 8-15 minutes to wash a car (depending on the size and the service requested), and 12-25 minutes to detail the car (upwards of 45 minutes for the really nasty cars such as some of the repos we get). The buffer usually takes between 8-12 minutes on the average car. The 12-25 minutes I spend detailing the car would be considerably reduced when cleaning a personal car, since the "detail" aspect of my job involves mostly removing items that were placed aftermarket (such as bar code stickers from rental companies, no-smoking stickers etc. Also removing chalk that has been written on the windows to identify the car's destination and service requested).

The shop I work in has different "stations" that the car goes through before it is inspected. I work primarily in the "detail" station. Prior to me getting a hold of the car, it is first washed in the wash bay, and then buffed by the buffer. Finally, it is "detailed" by the detailer (cleaning up all the nooks and crannies). Sometimes I rotate as a washer. I do not yet have experience with polishing machines, but there seem to be a few places that will train me to do it for a fee.

Anyway, I was thinking about offering NSXPrime members an exclusive deal where I detail their cars at a monthly or bi-monthly get-together with refreshments or barbeque or whatever. Depending on the cost of materials and how long it would take to wash, buff/wax, and detail the car, I was thinking somewhere in the range of $50-80 per car (NSX only).

I'm posting this thread to guage interest, as I still need to acquire a garage and some hardware (including a pressure washer), and the initial cost of investment is not one I can afford to make without the hope of a return.

I'm not trying to open a full fledged business, here. Just a friendly neighborhood NSX-wash where I can hang out with and get to know other people who share my interest while providing a service for them.

If people would be interested, please let me know.

A great detailer once told me the best way to learn is to go to a junk yard and find some old cars and start practicing on them before you go out and work on someone car.

Bailey, that is very true of rotary machines which can burn through your clear coat if used improperly. They can also sling polish all over parts of your car you don't want it.
Most commonly they can install holograms in your paint (not the cool ones!).

Random orbit machines are much safer, but much slower as well.

Every working day, the car can be drop off and drive a way clean at the end of the day/

I'm sorry PoohBEAR, I don't understand. Does it cost $200.00 each time you drop off the car? The wording and the context makes it sound to me like you pay a one time fee and you can have your car cleaned every day for the rest of your life with no addtional cost... which seems too good to be true.

Whatever it takes to get good at it. The last thing I want to do is ruin an NSX. Maybe I should offer it to some Corvette guys to get some practice, first.
