Intake - stupid question

Given the heavy flooding in S. Florida yesterday (I was smart enough to leave the NSX at home, but anyways), here is a question that exposes my ignorance: where is the intake on the NSX?

I remember last time we flooded this bad one of my employee's Integra cracked the engine because water got into it, and he said it was because Integras have the intake underneath...

NSX has the same bad design?

I also live in South Florida and your car should never be driven in conditions like yesterday and today. Standing water is not good for any vehicle, especially one that sits as low as the NSX

As for your question
It draws air in from the driver's side via the scoop. It's not a sealed setup so I'm sure it draws air from under the car and inside the engine compartment as well.

The story you mentioned about the Integra. Was he running a CAI? If so, those things place the air filter down inside the bumper to pick up fresh outside air. Those are usually to blame for hydro-locked motors. However, my buddy blew his stock 91 300ZX motor when he drove thru a deep puddle and the stock air box let the water in. Each car is different.

I don't think you are in any trouble unless you are running some type of CAI on you NSX. I thought I recall someone saying that the RM CAI system can allow water to get into the filter in heavy, heavy rain (standing water conditions). This is what I 'think' I heard.

Yes Titaniumvtec, that is what I heard as well with RM's cold air intake.

Rquintero, you need not to worry about getting water into the intake, because your stock airbox is very high up in the engine compartment, but do not drive what I drove through yesterday in Hialeah with your NSX, because you will definately have problems. And just incase if you were wondering, I left my NSX in my Wareshouse at work, and took my wifes 3.5RL through the floods to my house in kendall.

Where exactly do you live? Send me an email with your info. so that I can call you.
Are you a member of the NSXCA Florida Chapter?? We are a very proactive organization and hold montly meetings, and events in Florida. We are a little over 100 NSX's in the Club for Florida.

Nelson Landa

One of the import-focused cold air intake companies is now making a simple water trap that goes in the tube for their cold air intake. It is a simple design and if it is the same diameter as the RM intake, you could easily retrofit it with a couple of hose clamps. Can't remember the name of the intake company, but I have seen ads for them in several of the import mags (Super Street, etc.)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the responses. I'm in east Hollywood, office on Ives Rd... dealing with a 13k bill today from the guys just *drying* the office today!!! Replacing carpet & computer gear will be much more I'm sure - now just trying to deal with rigging workstations to keep some semblance of productivity here.

Anyways, I wouldn't dream of driving the NSX in those conditions, that is why I left it safely parked at home for the last couple of days and took the Land Rover (a POS but great for situations like these).

Titanium, probably another stupid question, but whats the deal with CAI? Really makes it that much worse? I've always worried about water & intake ever since seeing that Integra incident - which BTW I think was stock just judging by the owner.

Nelson, good to hear about FL chapter being active, I just joined the general NSX club and have been meaning to join the FL chapter as well. Surprised to hear 100 members, thats great!

RQUINTERO,

I WAS JUST CORRECTED ON THE NUMBERS OF FLORIDA MEMEBERS (76), BUT WE USUALLY HAVE ABOUT 20 NSX'S IN MOST OF OUR MONTHLY EVENTS. SEND ME AN EMAIL SO THAT MAYBEE ONE OF THESE AFTERNOONS, TITANIUMVTEC, AND MYSELF CAN GET TOGOTHER. I MIGHT BE HEADING TO HIS HOUSE THIS WEEKEND, BUT NOT SURE.
