What is the purpose of the plastic tube extension attached to the rear of the intake duct, located underneath the left rear fender? Is it tuned for a specific frequency? Mine was full of dirt and dust.

And while we're on the topic of strange devices, what is the purpose of the air pump located underneath the right rear fender? I can't find it in my service manual. Mine is damaged and a new one costs about $400.

Thanks for any insight.

The intake tubing or plumbing is designed for two reasons keeping heavy particles and water out and producing a desired tone or resonance. The fan on the right is likely a cooling fan that honda felt the car needed, but discontinued because it didnt. It only activates at a preset temp.

Thanks for responding. You're confirming what I was thinking about the air intake ducting. But the device at the right rear isn't really a fan, it's an air pump. It's got hoses that go to and from the engine and a big relay, probably 7lbs of stuff. I don't think Honda would have left it there if it wasn't needed for something. Is it on all model years? Mine's a 2000.

Can you take a picture?

Air Pump

I think you can thank the EPA for that!! I believe it IS an air pump that feeds six small nozzles/jets in the exhaust ports. Not quite sure exactly how it is designed to function. I need to get a NSX2000 service manual:).

I found it! It was in the 2000 supplement to the 1997 service manual. It is an emissions air pump. It is used along with a few other new components to allow the 2000 NSX to meet the Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standard. Now I can sleep at night!
