Installing short shift stalk.

How difficult is it to remove and replace the shift stalk?

TIA.

Based on a 1-5 level, 5 being most difficult. I would give it a 2. If you can take the center console cover off with out breaking something you are home free. You will love the short stalk. I took mine out and cut an inch off of it and stuck it back in.....nice.

I already have the center console out as I sent BrianK my CCU. I'm pretty good at mechanical things, is it just as simple as removing the visible bolts and sliding in the new stalk?

I removed the entire shifter assembly was easier to do it that way especially when you get to the plastic bushing part. I did NSX-R shift boot, SOS Short Gear Stalk with Extended Threads, and Dave's Short Shift Kit. I recently picked up a CT-Eng short shift kit so might swap out Dave's and try that one.

See excellent more or less same thing I did about 4yrs ago DIY here: http://nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php?t=87887

Just got done. Took about 30 minutes. I've had the short stalk in a box for almost five years. After screwing on the shift knob as far as it'll go, it doesn't seem that much shorter. Maybe I just have to go out and drive the car a little, but with the OEM knob, I don't know.

Did you do Dave's short shifter too you probably won't notice much of a change in the throw otherwise? The shorter stalk slightly re-positions the shifter closer to the driver side and the ext threads allowing you to lower the shift knob. I'm also running the OEM shift knob at the moment, and you can screw in down further down than the stock one you just replaced. I have an S2000 knob in my toolbox still waiting for me to be motivated to try it out.

I installed the SOS short stalk and an Integra Type R shift knob which is pretty much the same as our OEM. I didn't want a shorter throw, I just wanted to have it lower down. Maybe it's because I haven't sat in my car in almost three months that I forgot where the original height was. No big deal.

Do you know if the knob you're using has threads that go as deep as the NSX-R knob? That's what will buy you a shorter height.

I did mine a few years back with a shorter stalk and also cut the top down another 1-1/2 inch. I had the short shift kit, but removed it. I didn't like the shorter throw and it made it too hard to shift for me

The OEM knob does go a bit lower as I did notice this when I installedd mine. But I believe the NSX-R & Zanardi Type-S go even lower than the stock one can on the ext thread stalk.

Sucks you already put it in. It wont feel different unless you get the tear drop style that goes lower. What you want to do, trust me, get a nut, screw it on with the shifter out and grind off 1 inch of thread on the sos/zendari shift stalk. Then just level out your cut and take screw off to make sure threads are good. I guarentee you will like it..... And you know its an inch lower cause you cut an inch off.

It's no big deal. I can just remove the entire assembly in about five minutes and cut it shorter. So you think 1" is good enough?

Honestly, it's what ever feels good in your hand when you shift, and what has balance. If you use a long shift knob, then yeah it's not going to feel too different with the short stalk. (If comparing to OEM) If you use a shorter knob, again....it's gonna feel different.

Here's what matters. Do you like the way it feels when you shift, and is it aesthetically pleasing? Does the knob you've selected feel natural in your hand when driving/shifting?

Basically it doesn't matter what other people on this board think as far as what "they" would use or do. What matters is what you decide, and obviously that it doesn't hurt the function.

Shortening the shift leaver on your own again is going to come down to what you as a driver are looking for that personally pleases you.

Hope this helps...

How do you guys get the plastic bushing off? I don't want to break this little thing but at the same time I'm not sure how to remove it...... nevermind it broke :(.

I also did the 1" cut down from top.. very nice feel even on a stock shifter, I've forgotten how much like a bus that damn tall shifter was..

I agree the short-throw is waaay harder to shift when you wanna shift fast.

best for me : stock minus 1" + tear drop Zanardi look-a-like
