Here I go again....my trip odometer got stuck this past summer. I was hoping to have it repaired while my car is 'off road' for the winter. My dealer just called and said that the ENTIRE set of gauges would have to be replaced in order to repair the trip odometer. His price $1,100 :0/ I think he's fulla crap. Anybody out there have a similar problem? Any info regarding alternatives or fixes (except for the obvious need to find another dealer) would be greatly appreciated.

The retail price for a new speedo/trip odometer is $954.00. If you are an NSXCA member I would call Eric @ Niello Acura and see what price you can get from him. Also you might look for a used one.

OK so maybe I was a lil rough on my dealer. But it has been an INCREDIBLE summer. I am waiting on the dealership owner to fulfil his final set of promises before deciding if postingtothis website is warranted.

Thanks for the info. If the price is fair no problem...

If you have the know how and are able to remove the instrument cluster and take it apart, you can repair it. I helped a friend fix his stuck trip meter and it wasn't all too difficult.

We took the instrument cluster out of the car and then laid it on a workbench and disassembled the unit. The trip meter was held in with a screw. Taking it out, it was cleaned and lubed with WD-40. It worked perfectly.

Having the service manual helps tremendously. If the trip meter is broken, you can get one from one of the salvage yards for around $50 or so and install it.

Hope this helps.

My trip meter stuck last year. It acts like something is lodged in the gear that rolls the numbers back to zeros when I went to reset; they act like they are trying to turn, and keep bouncing back to 335.0. I did not want to tackle removing the cluster, so I have not repaired it. If you decide to tackle the job, please advise if you located the cause. I thought I would have the dealer repair it next time ... thinking I would get an hour labor charge, but over a grand is waking me up too!

YES! that's exactly the same situation occurring with mine. Trip odo will not reset to '000'....I think I am gonna tackle this job with someone at my side who is inifinitely more mechanically inclined than I am.....But before that I have one more avenue to explore.

You guys are INCREDIBLE. No way to express how impressive the spirit of cooperation is among owners of the car that Motor Trend magazine described (years ago) as the "best driving experience available in the world today" Many thanks.

Have you tried to take it out and clean/lube it?

My trip odometer gets stuck all the time. I just keep jabbing at the reset button with sharp pokes until it slowly starts to give way then resets to zero.

That worked for me too for a few times. Maybe I need to press it harder with the end of a hammer handle or something.

Hello All,
From what I recall, someone from Honda told me that you have to make sure that the car is not moving when you press the trip button. Otherwise, it will break it. I used to press it while my '89 Accord was moving, and it eventually had the same problem. At the time, my solution was to also jab at the button until it reset, but it made it worse to the point that it no longer works.
This message doesn't help those who already have a broken trip, but it is a heads-up for those who don't want this to happen to their cars in the future.

Good Luck,
J.

I dug up some photos of when I helped Mike Niday replace his trip meter. See pics of the project below:
