I'm thinking about going. Can anyone offer advice regarding the following : How far in advance do I need to purchase tix ? Is hotel accomidation difficult to obtain ? Is viewing the race in person actually worth the trouble ( In other words, does the grandstand offer good viewing of the race ) ? Is attending the Indy GP fun, or a colossul pain in the a$$ ?

I can't answer any of your questions, but I do have a question of my own. F1 cars are known to be very loud, so do people wear earplugs when they watch the races?

Assuming they come back to Indy, and more than 6 cars race, its fun to watch.

Ear plugs can be useful, especially if you're sitting on the front straightaway.

Mike-san- I have been to the USGP every year since they’ve been to Indy. Had a great time every time except of course last year. I’m expecting better things this year. My experience has been that the sooner you get your tickets the better your seats will be….although there is always people trying to sell tickets the day of the race. If you aren’t too picky about where you sit, 15 minutes or so before the race begins the scalpers prices seem to go down dramatically! If you sit in the main grandstands across from the pits, don’t sit in rows 1 through 10 unless you like seeing just the on-board camera zoom by at 200 mph. Our seats are down past turn one in stand J, section 24 and we get a great view of the first turn of the race (which always seems to have action) and the twisties after that. There is also a big screen TV there for us to watch as well. I would suggest you go Friday or Saturday and walk the track. It is general admission (open seating) those days so you can scout out where you would prefer to sit if you go back another year.

Getting a hotel can definitely be a problem……I suggest you start now as most of the hotels in Indy proper are already sold out. Sure there may still be a few but mostly outside of the city.

If you enjoy racing, experiencing it in person is great! Of course you can’t see the whole track but the huge TV’s help you follow the action in other areas you can't see. Different than most other US sporting events, this has a very international flavor and VERY passionate fans that fly in from all over the world. Makes for a fun weekend.

Radical- If you sit in the main grandstand section that has the roof over it you’ll want earplugs! If you sit elsewhere, I don’t think you’ll need them. They do sell earplugs at the track for a couple of bucks.

Thanks, I probably won't be going to any GP races any time soon, but I've always wondered about that.

Thank you for your insight. I appreciate it. Hey Ed !!! What are you waiting for ? Buy me a ticket !!!

I was really close to get a ticked last year and going, but the offered fell thru. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't go.
However I have gone to a few NASCAR races in the past and certainly found having earplugs a good thing. I could still hear everything going on around me but didn't have ringing ears for hours after the race was over.

I've been to the Indy 500, Nextel Cup races, NHRA Winter Nationals, and I went to the first US Grand Prix at Indianapolis a few years ago. If you're a race fan do yourself a favor and get to this race. The F1 circuit travels all over the world and only comes to North America twice a year, so unless you want to spend major bucks just to attend a race you need to find a way to get to Indy. It's close and it's within the United States (no passport or travel issues), so yea, I think it's worth it. Our seats were in the main grandstand about 3/4 of the way up and underneath the overhang, right across from pit exit. I did not wear ear plugs for the entire race because I wanted the full "F1 expericence". Well I got the full experience allright, my ears didn't stop rigning and I could't hear clearly for hours. I'll never do that again but I will definitely be going back to Indy for an F1 race and maybe even the 500 again this year. Last years 500 was incredible!! Find a way to get there and enjoy yourself.

Those that pay attention to the motorsports calendar already know that the USGP will return to Indy this year, the weekend of July 2nd.

I am a permanent season ticket holder for the USGP. I will have extra tickets available for sale for this year's event (part of the Michelin settlement from last year). Contact me later in the spring to inquire about acquiring them. They're not available until May.
