I'm doing the Timing Belt & Waterpump this weekend. Anything I need to look out for?

I'll be doing the Timing Belt & Waterpump this weekend. Do I need any special tools to hold the cams in place?

Thanks,
Eric

You will just need some 5mm punches to hold the cams in place.

A fresh tube of honda bond is always good too.

I wish I had the balls to do my TB/WP. Maybe if I saw someone doing it once or twice I'd try it. Let us know how you make out. Maybe take some photos.

You need the tool to hold the crank pulley and a torque wrench capable of 180 ft. lbs. Do the tensioner pulley when you're in there. Also replace the harmonic balancer (it's $250 well spent).Take your time and mark everything. I've done several timing belt replacements and this one is much harder, comparatively speaking. There are some good write-ups on the DIY forum and it helps to go over them before you start. The rear cam pulley mark is hard to see so an inspection mirror will also come in handy.
Good Luck!

I just did the Timing belt last weekend on my Audi A6 3.0. There's a reason why they call it the most complicated V6 ever.

That was my first timing belt and I feel like I can accomplish anything after that nightmare.

I had to buy $400 in special tools just to do that job.

I have the holding tool, but I'm running a aftermarket crank pulley (Supercharger) so I have no way of holding it. I'll just use my impact to zip it off.

Got the mirror and I plan on indexing everything with paint markers!

Thanks!

Just take your time and make sure you get the cams pinned, there is a lot of spring tension on the valves and without the pins the only stop the cam has is your valves and the top of a piston.

If your doing it with the engine in the car, I would recommend frequent breaks and a bottle of this to deal with the back pain.

You can DO IT!

definitely replace the water pump, tensioner, harmonic balancer, and valve cover gaskets as part of your service.

Man these projects always start with completing the intended task. But then the "you might as well do this and that...................................." comes around. Good luck. I am toying with fixing a small annoying oil leak on my rear valve cover. It seems easier to bite the bullet and write a check to my dealer some times.

Take photo's. Your previous write ups are enjoyable to watch and learn from............and that's what it's all about.

good luck I learned the hard way.

the NSX is easy if you have the manual and

if you have your NSX mech

on speed dial LOL.

My Valve Cover Gaskets are already new, and yes; I'm replacing the tensioner and waterpump as well.

As I previously mentioned, I'm running a aftermarket main pulley so replacing the harmonic balancer isn't necessary.

Just make sure you dont damage them when removing and replacing the valve covers. The rear cover is sometimes frustrating to replace because of the tilted motor and the wire harness going to the o2 sensors.

Just did my timing belt last year. It was my first time doing an NSX and I must say the job is really not that difficult at all. Only problem I had was getting the crank pulley bolt off since I didn't have access to a good impact gun and the previous mechanic over tighten the bolt. I broke a lot of tools trying.

Sounds like you have a good amount of experience with timing belt jobs so the NSX should be pretty straight forward for you. Like others have mentioned, take your time, mark everything and don't rush.

The picture below has some helpful tips in finding and getting to all the timing cover bolts a bit quicker. Picture posted by 'ftuhy' post#28 in this thead here.

Good luck and have fun!

If you got thru the Audi you'll be fine , yea the crank bolt is tight ,just need a strong impact . All honda crank bolts are tight ,when you do it everyday you learn how to wing them off. Slipping the belt over the rear exhaust cam is where I feel most guys have problems . The write ups on this site are great , I am always impressed by the guys that take this job on ,and do it . When I did mine I had a very dense cataract in my left eye (legally blind ,could not see 20/400) . Had to mark each belt cog to the gears (had a set of 5mm dowels made for alignment ) and then revert to a vacumn gauge on start up . On start up I knew it was ok but is was nice to see 21" on the gauge (which i have posted ) . I have been doing these for 40 yrs but Iwas a little nervous when I fired it off  Its tough getting old (my boss use to say Youth is wasted on Youth --boy was he right )

Thanks, I always take photos but I somehow lost my SD card so I wasn't able to take pictures this time.

All done, I just need to bolt my valve covers back down. The only thing I broke was my back.

Nice work. How long did it take?

Nice work. How long did it take?

8 hours yesterday and 4 hours today. But, I take lots of breaks.

Nice work. I wish I could watch someone do the TB/WP job one day. I guess it goes back to the old saying; if you give a man a fish he'll eat for a day, if you teach him to fish he'll eat for the rest of his life. Maybe I could start small like on my CRX.

Breaks are important , excellent time , I hope you have a heated garage , I'dont ,my days of laying on cold concrete are over !

Unfortunately, I don't. It was 31 today, my bones still hurt :frown:

More importantly, how many beers did it take?

No beer, atleast while doing the Timing Belt. I'd end up installing it with the teeth pointing up!
