ignition timing off?

What dictates where the ignition timing comes from? Sensors and the ECU? I just checked mine for the first time and at idle it is way off the marks to the left. I'm assuming the engine is at the recommended idle speed. I am in the middle of a rear o2 sensor change and decided to check for giggles because of the rough idle. I noticed water in the rear plug holes (due to having to use the garage space during the winter for a couple days) but it seems odd to have a CEL for the rear O2 and water in the plug holes and timing off at the same time. I wonder if during those winter cold slow low battery starts something else could have happened?

On the water in the rear plug holes topic, make sure the shield is "right side up" with the gasket at the top (and in good condition). Otherwise, you get water in the plug holes.

I've seen lots of post saying be careful washing the car, etc because of the water problem. But I wash mine with a hose and don't block the vent below the rear window, drive in heavy thunderstorms, etc and have never had a drop of water in the plug holes. However, put the cover on upside down or leave out the seal, and the cover becomes a funnel.

On the timing issue, I've not had any experience with that, other than to ask about the timing belt. If that was installed incorrectly and was off by a tooth or two, that could be the problem. Anyone else on Prime agree or disagree with my WAG?

Most timing problems are seen on the rear bank exhaust cam since it's the one that doesn't line up perfectly. The crank sensor is on the front bank.

I'm curious as to where the inductive sensor was clipped.

The ECU controls the timming, there is an adjustment but it never needs adjustment, well never that I have heard of. My guess is you are looking at the wrong mark, you are looking for the red mark.

any one care to show how the timing is adjusted?
just curious.

Problem solved! When I cleaned the water out and plug change along with the O2 sensor change the car has never run better. The car already ran good but when the new O2 went in it seemed like I have better bottom end now. Thanks guys
BTW I haven't been pushing it but I will still sell it. Search my post in for sale or user name.

Angus, you know the +2/-2 screw thingy in the engine bay under the black plastic with the egr controls and what not.
Drill out the two rivits and there is the screw.
Clockwise for plus
Counter clockwise or minus.
Or did you already know that and was looking for more info, the big picture, the big mac, the big kahuna?

BUT... BIG KAHUNA BURGER? maybe.

yeah, ok big guy, but he is talking 92-93 and your off it OBDII land. Thats like talking about guacamole or ketchup and mustard on your burgers dude!
Two different restaurants! Red Robin for the guac and Earls for the K&M.
Hum, hungry now, when you coming to town next.

you sure its off?

wait for the car to warm up?

also with the timing adjustment screw, you can fiddle with it but it will not get your car back with in range.
