Actually, it is recommended to get it aligned whenever you change tire sizes. However, I went to 17/18 from 15/16 and did not align. I have not noticed any unusual wear or shimmering..... so I guess it's fine.

It's a valid question. Why wouldn't the aligment be affected when going up one inch? I understand that lower profile tires compensate, but surely the alignment would be off and cause unusual tire wear

Why would the alignment be off? The wheels are bigger but the sidewall height is smaller, so the outer diameter of the tire remains the same. There's no reason for the alignment to change.
