I think I just got "profiled".

Well, I just wanted to relate a little episode that happened to a good friend of mine and myself a couple days ago when we were driving back from Nopi.

We were on I-20 Interstate and had just crossed over from Georgia to South Carolina.
I had previously warned my friend ( who was driving my NSX) to make sure and go the speed limit because we would make a fine catch for some patrol officer. Consequently, he set the cruise control right at 70mph (even though traffic was about 75-85mph), and we were crusing on our merry way when a big black unmarked suburban came tearing right up on our rear bumper and started flashing his red and blue grill lights.

We glanced at the speedometer and exchanged a quick WTF? before the officer approached my passenger side. I had the window down and the officer leaned in and sternly asked my friend to get out of the car and meet him at the back of the vehicle so that he can explain why he pulled us over.

I then watched in the side view mirror as my high school friend from Indiana got totally grilled for a solid 10 minutes or longer. I couldn’t hear what was being said, but I could tell the officer was being relentless about something.

The officer then approached my passenger side and stuck his head literally in the car ( a few inches from my face) and started up with me. Mind you, at this point, I have no idea why we’re pulled over. The conversation went something like this:

Him: So this is your car?
Me: yes sir, I’m just letting my friend drive it.
Him: your friend?....so you know this guy pretty well?
Me: yes, very well.
Him: Where are you guys coming from?
Me: Atlanta….from a car show
Him: what day did you get down there?

{I’ll now skip all my very polite answers and just list a few more of his questions?}

Him: What days were the show? What day did you leave? Which hotel did you stay at? Which Embassy Suites location was it? So if you were there for 3 days where’s all your luggage?
( I explained to him that we had UPS’d our luggage there and back to save car space…he gave me a look like he didn’t believe me)

He hit me with a about a dozen more questions along those lines. When I tried to reassure the guy by telling him I was a doctor, he just started grilling me on my speciality, location of my office as well as hospital affiliations!

Ultimately, he offered up that the reason he pulled us over was because he thought the windows were tinted too dark. I was in disbelief. Pulled over for tint at 70mph on the interstate!?! I told the officer that I had bought the NSX used from Florida where it was tinted, and I believed the tint to be of legal darkness.

The officer then had me put up my window and he scrutinized the tint. He then concluded that it was too close to tell for sure if it was illegal, and he said that he would just give us a warning on a tint violation. He then added ( with his head ½ way in my car still) , “Anyways, it gives me a chance to look around in here and make sure everything is OK”

With that, he let us go. The whole traffic stop took nearly 25 minutes. The officer had a hard time believing that we were who we said we were. My friend ( who is a big, slightly overweight, unassuming Midwestern Caucausion type with Indiana drivers license) and myself ( an Indian that could pass as black, Hispanic, middle east, etc..) was just too big of mismatch in his little mind that he thought he was on to something. Or perhaps it was just other factors….

At least that’s what my guess was. Who knows what the real motive was for pulling us over. I must say, that due to the extent of the questioning and hostile attitude, I did feel like my civil rights were stepped on a little bit. Am I going to do anything about? No. It’s not really worth it to me. I just thought I’d vent it out to my fellow NSX brethren.

So What ??

Big deal.....you were pulled over. :p

Your point is?

We have all been pulled over to "be profiled".

Andy Andy Andy... let the man vent please..
not all of us are fond of the boys in blue that are perpetual line steppers.

Doc, sounds like he was using you as an example on the side of the road. Setting the tone for any would be speeders. Sounds like you guys handled yourselves well.

Don't mind Andy, he used to pull the wings off of flies as a Child. ;)

Well, Andy. I too have been pulled over before. Probably 4 or 5 times in my life. I never have felt "profiled" before. To clear up your confusion, I was venting due to the extent and hostility of the questioning, as I clearly stated.

What's the point you ask? I'm not sure venting requires a reason, let alone one that meets your approval.

Perhaps you are accustomed to being pulled over, separated from your passenger for 25 minutes while you both are questioned on you last 3 days of doings. Perhaps. Or, perhaps it's just Andy being Andy again and much like the traffic stop...just ignore it and let it go.

Re: So What ??

I've been pulled over a couple times for accelerating away from a traffic light a little too "agressively"..... pulled over, lecurted on how my exhaust is too loud, and how i should slow down a bit. the second time i didnt have my insurance paperwork (automatic $500 fine) and no registration paperwork, because i just got the car out of the paint shop and previous to bringing it in there i cleaned out the glove box and forgot to put it all back in.

Both times turned out the same.... i got lectured for a few minutes, and then they said "nice car, now get the hell out of here", and i replied "thanks, and ok"

Only thing i've seen alot is them picking on the younger drivers, but then again alot of times they deserve it. I know i did when i was 18 LOL!

Peace Pipe

With solemn regards, I retract my previous post.

I do not delete it, so that the "paper trail" can be followed.

Len - my German is rusty, but you have something that is interesting. :)

Basically the Best or Nothing. I haven't found the best, so right now I am dealing with nothing..(NSX - wise) You know how it is when you can't leave well enough alone.
I do that a lot....

On topic: Doc, The trooped was probably mad he couldn't find anything to write you up for.
Did he ask to search the car?

Not The Drink

Das Beste Oder Nichts

Jaegermeister (sp?) also has multiple meanings, depending on the context of the sentence. ;)

Sorry to hear of your troubles Dan.
BTW, is was nice meeting you. The tint laws down here are pretty tight. I have been pulled over and given a ticket for that very thing.
Luckily we didn't have any 'excitment' like that on our trip home.

I had a similar situation many years ago (but without the questions about the previous 3 days activities). TWO patrol cars stopped me in a very aggressive manner basically boxing me in. One had been behind me for a while but had made no move to stop me - the second one I never saw until he literally swooped in front of me. They were aggressive and hostile but no tickets wer written. I told the story the next day to a cop buddy and his response was simple - either they were looking for someone else or they were pissed that they didn't have to chase me - they had actually told me that I "looked like I was really going to take off when I hit the back roads". If they only knew!! I've also been stopped and had such a disagreement with the officer that I've asked for a supervisor to respond to the scene - and then been told that the officer is going to "give me a break" by not writing a citation and that I should thank him! Yeh - hello! Why can't some of these guys just admit when they've made a mistake? In this case he was dead flat wrong and I knew it - and I think the sergeant knew it too 'cause they had a private chat before the sergeant came over to tell me the nonsense about getting a break. ;)

Andy, the peace pipe is officially accepted and toked off of. Thanks, for the retraction...it takes a big man to step forward like that.

On topic:

No, he didn't ask to search the car. Due to the questions regarding our lack of luggage, I really felt he was trying to ask me questions to trip me up in some manner. ( I told him I had a few clothes in my targa cover, but I think that went straight over his head). I'm sure at the first sign of deception, he would have searched the car.

I figured when I posted this, I would get some other people's experiences. I guess when you drive a hot sports car like an NSX, we're going to get a lot of attention...both good and bad!

docdan,
Even though it will not resolve anything for you, if you lodge a complaint against the officer (assuming you got his name or his badge number), it could be the first step in getting a reprimand (or more, if others have already complained).

If nobody ever officially complains, the guy will be able to repeat his behavior with impunity.

Well, I'll go against the crowd here. I have no problem being pulled over, but if I am polite and not breaking any laws then I would expect better treatment than what it appears you got. I would mention the officer's abrasive behavior to his department. There are some excellent officers out there, and then there are the stereotypical Buford T. Justice 'big ego/low IQ' guys. I would hope that with some public feedback, the police departments can keep the latter group in check (or better yet on security patrol at the mall).

I was pulled over a while back by two patrol cars, no reason given. The cops grilled me much of the same way, without the travel questions. When asked for my insurance, I handed the officer my card, he promply handed it back to me saying it was expired by 5 days. He walked back to his patrol car to write me a ticket for no proof of insurance. I then remembered that my new insurance card was in my office bag in the trunk. I got out of the car stating what I was doing. Two of the four officers drew their guns and one on the PA yelled "get back in the car!!!" The officer writing the ticket came back to the car, hand on his gun, asked me what I was doing. I explained that my current insurance card was in my trunk, he instructed me to get out of the car and open the trunk slowly. With all four of the officers standing at attention with their guns ready I opened my trunk and gave him my insurance card. I asked them did they think a migget was going to jump out of my trunk and get them. They did not find that funny. The officer then proceeded to write me a ticket for changing lanes without a blinker when they were pulling me over.

Das Beste Oder Nichts = The best or nothing

In NY one can tint their windows darker than legal with a prescription from a doctor. I carry a prescription from a doctor in all my vehicles. I have been pulled over twice and then let go when I produce the prescription. I am not sure if this is possible in your state, but I would check into it if I were you.

BTW I do have a valid reason for having such a prescription. My girlfriend had brain surgery two years ago and is prone to wicked headaches if she is in the sun too long.

The local police in the city where I live cruise around and blast rap music or Latino music out of the patrol car. None of them obey any of the traffic laws. As far as profiling they pull over young good looking women most of the time, then flirt with them. The mall security guards are all under 20 years old. They are about as helpful as a hole in the head.

considering the white guy was driving, do you really think you were profiled?

Could have been a report about a stolen sports car your color in the area...

Steve, I couldn't agree more.

It pisses me off beyond belief when I see people that abuse the authority that society has granted them to do a legitimate job. In my area, I the primary police activity is usually some combination of snoozing on the job, cruising at 90mph on the interstate for no reason, chucking trash out the car window, having a leisurely lunch in groups of 20 at the local places that give a police discount, or trying to set up something new and clever for this week's revenue collection points.

We pay the 'public servants' to protect and enrich the community. With a couple exceptions, this does not seem to seem to be where the energy is focused in my area.

Sorry for the rant.

While more than 90% of my encounters with the police have been ok the few bad apples out there REALLY stand out. As for them speeding - I recently complained to the Chief of a department about one of his units doing in excess of 90mph in a 65mph zone on the Garden State Parkway. Over an hour from their jurisdiction so I'm quite sure that no urgent police business was involved. The Chief expressed interest and promised to look into it - but I never heard any more about it.

Hey Dan, Sorry to hear about what happened. Been there did that.
#1--Tint too dark. Officer it was done it Jax to meet SC laws...OH..Sees the label then... lets me go.
#2--Tint too dark. Officer..(see above.) Well, Your car sit too low...WHAT!! Lets me go.
#3-- Exhaust too loud. Officer it's a stock exhaust. Well you need to stop revving your engine so high to start from a light. 1500 rpm. Let's me go.
#4--Supercharger times..Exhaust too loud...got out of that ticket. He heard me doing 45mph in a parking lot Hooters...No lie..that's why he stopped me.
#5-- 4 point ticket for not using my turn signals 1 point per time. I did use them. He didn't like the car and asked me WHAT AM I DOING WITH A CAR LIKE THIS!! ...My answer..WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? Officer: I SHOULDN"T BE DRIVING A CAR LIKE THIS. Went to court and told the judge my side of the story. Judge couldn't believe one of his officers would say such a thing. FULL FINE AND POINTS.. NO REDUCTION AT ALL. USE MY SIGNALS NEXT TIME. HAVE A NICE DAY.

All this within 12 months in the great City of N. Charleston, SC.

Didn't You See.....

Why are you always so hostile towards other members?

.....where I later apologized and it was accepted? Think before you drink. Or in this case, read before you type. :p

True story when I first got my NSX. My wife and I are coming home from dinner. I had the car for approximately one week. In Texas it is illegal (though not strongly enforced) to change lanes as you are passing through an intersection. I did so and the lights came one from Cop Car (CC) #1. By the time I pulled over to a safe area there were two CC's. Before it was all over, there were FOUR CC's on me.

At that time - as currently - I have zero moving violations on my record, so I am pondering what in the world is going on. During the usual Q-n-A session, I explained how I had just purchased the car, yada, yada, yada.

Towards the end, I heard two of the officers off to the side say, "Does he look oriental?" More on this in a sec.

"No."

"Sir, you are free to go."

"Thank you, but what was all the mix up?"

As it turns out the guy that owned the car before me (last name was Nguyen) raced the car up and down one of the popular streets, and had previously outran the cops. His plates were still in the police computers and they pulled me over because they thought I was him.

That's a nice story for the grand kids.

On the flip side:
I was just out at lunch (not in NSX) and waiting at a red light; I was first in line in the right lane, another car beside me in the line to my left & cars in the left turn lane on the other side of that; the left turn arrow came on & the car beside me proceeded into the intersection while still on our red light - he half stopped mid-way through & decided he was already over-committed to do anything other but continue.
What made it interesting? A motor-cycle cop on the opposite side of the intersection, at the front of his line, turned his head around following the guy through visually, then proceeded on his same direction when his light turned without even a finger wag at the guy!
Go figure!

Good point. Maybe I should say "we" got profiled. Actually that phrase and concept was first uttered out of my friend's mouth as we pulled away from the scene.

I'm not sure it's a race thing at play here. I think it was a combination of factors. High visiblility red NSX. We are driving exactly the speed limit. We are on a well known drug corridor. And I'll even admit that my friend and I don't exactly match. For what ever reason, he didn't think we knew each other. He asked me how long we knew each other. ( since early high school).. "so I suppose you just happen to keep in touch with your old friend all the way back in Indiana". ..actually, yes!
It may have been a reported stolen car, or the cop may have just wanted a up close look at the car. I just didn't appreciate all the time he took questioning us. I think he could have established our legitimacy in a much more timely fashion. 25 minutes is not an exaggeration.

SNDSOUL:
Getting a ticket for no signal while changing lanes while being pulled over is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of.

Charles:
That's a pretty B.S. situation. Driving a really nice car probably made that cop pretty jealous. Its hard for some people to conceive that people might actually work hard to earn the cars they drive.
