I have a spare crankshaft - should I keep it?

This might sound a bit odd, but bear with me....

A while ago I bought a bunch of spare parts from Mase In Jacksonville, partly because I have an older boosted motor so 'just in case', partly because the price was decent. As is Steve (Mase), great guy.

So, I bought a block, heads, crankshaft, and a shit load of engine parts - cams, pipes, covers, you name it. I had the heads, block and crank looked over by Precision Machine here and they said all is in great shape.

I saw someone looking for a crank recently and wondered about letting it go, which begs the question: "what really drives the need for a new crank?"

Is this basically just down to when the bearings are bad and the crank can't be reground? Downside of regrinding a crank? Typical cost?

What would you do? I don't really need the cash right now although having more would be nice. A good price? I don't think that these are available anymore, correct?

My pending major service and/or rebuild thread is here:

Thx in advance for any feedback!

Thoughts anyone?

personally if you are not a track runner, don't intend on modifying your own engine beyond,IHE, then sell, but if you engage in risky behavior with your car keep it.

Since you "don't really need the cash right now" maybe you should just let me come up and pick up the spare bits since i'm just down in Lake Worth.

Cheers

Cranks can't be touched really since they have some type of coating if my memory serves me right, and if they can it's very minor. Also from my understanding bearing sizes are an issue with our cranks. There's really no wiggle room so once you have oil starvation then it's likely you have damage of some kind and it's up to whoever inspects your engine to note if your crank is still good or not.

It's been a while but that's what my understanding was. When I had oil starvation we were able to save the crank and it's still in my car.

Thanks for all the feedback on this, good food for thought. SDUFF, any idea where you came across that info? Can anyone else confirm this?
