Well, after owning my beloved 95 Integra GSR for 12 yrs, it finally succomed to the scum of the earth and was stolen Sunday night. It wasn't taken from my house so that is a little better. I don't put blame on the shop that it was at as it was in their parking lot but not behind a fence or anything.
I had dropped it off to a repair shop on a busy street around 1:30 Sunday afternoon. The shop called me Monday and said that there was broken glass in the parking lot and my car was gone. I thought he was joking but sadly, he wasn't.
I called insurance company and police to make a report. The cops came and I gave all info and filed the report @ 9:30 am.
I get home for lunch @ 11:15am and a cop had called my home @8:30 that morning notifiying me that they had found my car. I was happy, and scared to call him back.
I did and he said it wasn't in very good shape.
I went to the wrecking yard yesterday to drag and home and see if I could salvage anything from it and maybe sell some parts and make something good out of something bad.
Well, I get there and the engine, tranny, complete interior, all front suspension, and PCM was gone. They didn't cut a single wire in the engine bay while removing stuff. The a/c system was still intact and the lines were disconnected but not cut. Wheels were gone but they put on little cheap steel wheels so they could roll it. I was crushed. I loved that little car and to see it in that condition was heartbreaking.:frown:
I hate to admit it but they did a pretty good job of taking everything so clean and so fast. I was truly amazed. Police said it looked like some experienced folks did the job.
As for insurance, since the car had been paid off many years ago and the added amount of $$ for carrying the coverage that would've covered it was to much, I chose not to have it. It would've only probably given me ~$1000 or so. Who knows with Allstate, they are crooks like the rest of them.
I don't regret not carrying the coverage for it as the $$ I saved over the years of not having it is more than they would give now.
So today I went and cleaned out my personal stuff that they left in the car and said my final good byes. I feel like a family member has passed away.
Now, I begin my search for another DD. I'm having the drive the NSX full time now and I'm a bit more nervous about leaving it out as if something happens to it I'll really be in a pickle. And yes, I DO carry full covereage on it even though it is paid off.
I'm thinking of getting a Civic or something like that. I don't really want another thief magnet though. I only want to spend a few thousand $$. Any suggestions.

sucks, sucks, sucks. That's so bad man. Hope you're feeling better. Those scummy thieves. Sucks that people take stuff from others that's not their's, and in your case do that for a living.

Sorry to hear about that. Sucks. I too am an Integra fan and its unfortunate that we can't just drive and leave the car w/o worrying. Mine has been out of my hands a few times, but only in shops where its parked inside, in the back w/ other cars blocking it.

Again, sorry to hear about this. Hopefully you find a new fun DD soon. Civic is a good choice. If I didnt DD my Integra, I'd get a Civic.

btw i concour on the civic, mine got broken into last month in LA see http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=112232
that marked the third time it's been victimized across different states. Those cars are the toy store for crooks.

Damn Integra's. My GSR got broken into 3 times in one year...including coming out to see it on cinder blocks. (stock wheels are favorites!) This was back in '99.

Sorry for your loss... :frown:

I had a dream not too long ago my NSX ended up on cinder blocks =[ it was so scary.. and then i woke up! I have dreams of my NSX being stolen and such frequently =[

Hopefully your next car isn't a theif magnet =] Just daily drive the NSX

same thing happened to my brothers type r. 7 years of nothing happening to it at all. Takes it to the bodyshop for a minor fix, get it back and the next night it's gone from our house. next morning cops call saying they found it completely stripped.

My insurance would of never been involved. I would have the shop pay for everything. that's why they are insured, for cases like this. If you ask my opinion i bet it was the shop who set the whole thing up! I would talk to the owner and ask him to give you a couple grand. I sell 94 beat up gsr's all day long for 2.5K-3K minimum. good shape gsr's almost 4K.

People just have nothing better else to do and ruin someone elses prized possession.

2x

It's an inside job involving a worker/employee tip'off to an outsider, w/o ANY doubt. Either you have an instinct to recognize these things, or you don't. How/what you do from here is up to you, your personality & demeanor, etc'. I know what I would do.

My 2-pence. . .

Wow. That is terrible news. Very sorry to hear this. I would go after the shop for something also. The car was in their care. Where was this or what part of town?

As for a replacement, how about a Civic Si.

hope your being a smart ass about the si, cause those are just as bad

Craigslist. get a $700 beater, It (may) be worth it.

or install some deadly toxic gas that is activated by you when your not driving (like a deadly james bond car alarm) and make sure to put a warning sticker on your window too. car ok. dead guy (wont steal anything from anyone again) plus he will be warned

You never leave a civic/integra/etc. outside in an open parking lot by an import only or specialized repair facility. Not only is there a high chance for employees to contact friends/get into trouble themselves, even a dumb thief (unfortunately many of them are quite clever) is going to go buy those places on weekend nights looking for an easy meal ticket. It's sad but this is society and this is as good as it gets!

I hear you though, I had liability for the entire duration I owned my 94 all original GSR sedan. I was also paranoid it was going to be stolen but I know the new owner and it's still virgin and unmolested to this day (by thieves or "tuners"). I saw it about two weeks ago actually.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm glad to see my fellow car buddies know where I'm coming from in feeling this way.
I have left the car at this shop outside before with no issues at all.
I know the owner very well as they are a client and good friend of many years. I've gone golfing with him before. I would be absolutely floored if he or his shop had anything to do with it.
I try not to think about it to much before it makes me sad to know what happened. It looked so sad sitting there stripped down. It was almost like it was sorry too that it happened and it didn't want me to see it in that condition.
Oddly, I've never been paranoid about leaving the NSX anywhere but now that it is forced into being a temporary DD, I'm quite a bit more concerned. If something happens to it insurance will step in but I would REALLY be in a bad predicatment with only one vehicle.
Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

Sorry about your loss.
I once had a GS-R too (sold it five years ago when I got an NSX).

I can't offer advice on what to get for a daily driver,
but I can say that my approach to dealing with the
hazard of theft was to move to a rural area with
minimal crime. I realize this isn't practical for everyone.

lowly low-types, not reputable high-types...

Quite often the owner is unbeknownst [sic] to the actual realities & day-to-day happenings of their shop & business. Nor can they account or vouch for each one of their employees in terms of integrity/character/honesty.

A good personal friend who was an actual NSX master-tech' opened his own import tuning/repair shop here in 'towne. A year or so later, there was a major sting operation by the local & state authorities who assumed it was a chop-shop in the flavor of 'Fast & the Furious'. The reality was a rogue employee was knowingly swapping stolen parts into some cars (motor-swaps, etc') as well as promoting it. My friend lost his shop, all his equipment/tools, and everything else of relevance.

(the whole incident was posted on 'Prime in '04 or '05, but I can't locate the actual thread/posts)

Maurice, it still smells way too icky to me. And I don't like 'ick. Too many convenient situational-commonalities/circumstantial-coincidences/etc' regarding what took place from other tales & events I've heard about and/or witnessed.

He's right. If he is a friend doesn't he feel bad. Gosh if it where my friend i guarantee that i would have a rental and a replacement in about a week from him. Like Osiris_x11 mentioned it could of been a employee who set this all up. Don't take this personal, but don't be soft. Why don't you go up to him and ask him to help you out because the insurance only gave you a 1K. And his insurance didn't even get involved and your his customer who always brings his car for repairs. Motor, trans, ecu and harness can be replaced for honestly 2g's if you look around. Have him eat half the parts and eat all labor. There are plenty of import shops who can do the complete install for $450. Surf the internet and read your options about this situation. If you ask me, i don't think he's a good friend, more like a business relationship. (he's a friend when your whole family knows him imop)If i where him, i would of had all this fixed.

I was just making a suggestion. I haven't heard bad crime on the new Civic Si. If there is, then my bad.

Other cars that might be fun: Cobalt SS, Mustang GT, Volkswagen GTI, Volvo C30 T5, maybe an S2000? Of course, all of those are more than a few $$$.

If you are going to get a daily driver you might as well get something you would enjoy. Afterall, you are driving it every day! Just my 2 cents.

I thought civics were stolen more often than integras. Whatever you get just make sure the key is chip'd.

I too think it's fishy that such "professional" thieves didn't cut any wires but yet still resorted to the rock through the window technique to get in.

GSR's are the supreme target because everything on a GSR goes right into the Civic.

Including the cool seats and of course the nicer 1.8 engine.

You'll often find your GSR stripped...parts spread among 100's of other civic owners. :frown:

I haven't decided yet just exactly how to handle the situation with the shop yet. I'm somewhat surprised that to this point he has offered a single dime in compensation for my loss. I'm going to mention to him about the insurance denying the claim and see if he steps up and offers anything then. If he doesn't then I think I might sever ties with him.
One thing is for certain, I'll never use him again for repairs.
A Civic is a great little car but I too have thought about the fact that it is probably a pretty hot commodity on the black market also.
I really just hate being put back into this position.

Man, I'm sorry to hear about this. God I hate car thieves.

I would avoid any cheap honda/acura it's unless you know it will be garaged all the time. Best bet is to get something rarer than a honda/civic or a car that the more mature crowd goes after.

I've always thought the Subaru 1998-2001 Imprezza RS were pretty cool cars. Not a lot of people have them so I doubt anyone would steal it for parts. Also has AWD so makes it a good winter beater if it snows in your area.
