I have asked this question before. I want to replace my gearshift knob with a different type.

I tried simply unscrewing the gearshift knob. The problem is the entire boot turns with it.

Members have said to remove the "snap ring" below the knob. I see a chrome ring at the bottom of the knob, but how do I get it off?

A simple step-by-step removal of the knob would be appreciated!

I am going to install an aftermarket knob. How do I keep the boot attached to it so it doesn't slip down?

Thanks!

just grab the boot at the base of the knob and push down! hard!

I want to replace the knob but don't want to pay $175 at the dealer.

Is there a way to secure the boot and sanp ring to the bottom of an aftermarket gearshift knob?

What I ended up doing to get a Momo Combat Evo in place (thought this one was the best match for the Momo Jet wheel), was to buy the Dali metal ring thing. I attached that do the chrome shift boot clip, then just screwed the aftermarket head down.

The result is about 2 or three rings of thread visible, so a bit of chrome shows, but it looks pretty good because of the Dali clip. So its chrome/black/chrome/knob and it is pretty clean.

Depending on the knob, you'll usually have to sort of hack something together. Before the combat Evo I had a plain leather Momo knob and that one screwed all the way down.

This not exactly what you're asking but I just changed to the NSX-R shift lever so I could thread the OEM down further (I personally like that one). I ended up having to drill into the OEM a bit so it could thread further down. I also ended up cutting the NSX-R shifter by about a half inch. Now with the shifter (and short shift kit), I'm very pleased with the look feel and action of the shifter.

You remove the old boot by pulling strait down on it. No need to use a screwdriver you could scratch it or the damage the dash.

Get one with a clip on it already. Twist it on and clip the boot in.

If the chrome ring does not match your new shift knob then remove it. Use a zip tie from underneath to make the hole of the boot tight enough to slip up to your new knob.
