JACKSON HOLE , WY—Hunter JB Geary of Jackson Hole, Wyoming was extremely proud of being able to outsmart an elk during a weekend hunting trip, even though he is a heavily armed adult human and the elk is an unarmed wild animal with a brain the size of golf ball.
*** “That, my friend, is how to outsmart an elk,” Geary, 40, told his son after shooting one down. “See, it’s not enough just to hide behind the tree. You also have to keep dead silent, and make sure he can’t see your hands or the muzzle of your gun. Then when he gets into view, take aim and—boom—you got your trophy.”
***Last week, Geary outsmarted a duck by luring it with a whistle and then shooting it.

I think the animals should also be armed...just to round out the whole thing.

They don't even have to armed. How about you(the hunters) hunt the way they did in the good ole' days. Hunt with a knife, or bow and arrow.

what is the sport in shooting down an animal with a high powered rifle.

That's what I think too. I used to hunt. It's been 5 or 6 years since I've been though. I bow hunted. I've never seen the point of shooting an animial 200 yards away with a rifle. Where's the skill and how is that a sport? Bow hunting is tough. These days though I would rather take a good camera out there and do some "shooting". I guess I've grown soft lately.

There are the counter arguments--

It isn't all joy-killing going on out there-

population thinning- if deer over populate they will starve themselves to death, or enter populated areas to scavenge your garbage cans, destroy property, and spread disease.

Some people eat what they kill. I know some guys from college who grew up eating venison killed in season.

For some hunting is a family activity- a chance for fathers to spend time with sons (or daughters)

I am not saying you have to like it, but the counter point exists- man has pointy teeth- meant for tearing flesh. We are carnivores gentlemen- it is in our program to kill in order to sustain ourselves wheather you drink soy milk, eat boca burgers, and tofurkey or not. Some people like to realize that instinct in an act of savagery by mercilessly snuffing Bambi's inner light.

but I understand if you disagree.

After all, I don't hunt.

I buy my steaks at the grocery store.

My Dad and I got to car shows, and NSXPO for our father / son time, and I believe my Stepmother would strangle me if I tried to tell her I was going to go off and kill an animal for the purpose of controlling their population...

I do like guns, specifically I like to shoot at inanimate targets. High powered rifle or not- picking off a moving target at 200 yards isn't a piece of cake. It requires a significant amount of nerve to focus on and execute a killing shot like that in the conditions encountered in the field (cold, wet, low, or high light condition, wind), consider the pressure of missing your prey, and possibly spilling your beer (j/k :D )

It isn't all point and shoot, no matter how folks want to percieve it.

Hunting is a skill, just like guiding your car safely around a track at high speed is a skill. It requires plenty of brain power. Just because you don't do it is no reason to cast down all who do.

just my .02

Philip

I don't hunt, but I do like to fish on occasion... imagine how small THEIR brains are! :D

I see and understand your point H-carWizKid. I personally just don't care for rifle hunting like that. To each his own.

My mom actually ran back into the house and cried that I had "killed Bambi" the first time I came home with a deer. It was Thanksgiving morning and I was out back cleaning it and bringing in piles of meat while she was trying to prepare Thanksgiving dinner. It didn't go over well, but luckily the guy who took me hunting was a surgeon so it went very fast.

wants vs. needs

My mom's uncle was a poacher (crocs, tigers, pandas, asian-lions, antelope/gazelle/dear, leopard/jaguar, wild boar, etc). My mom's brother (mentored by the uncle) is an avid hunter. Though he resides in SoCal, he still owns property in Scotsdale so he can go for his hunt-outings. We're talkin' whole nine-yards and enchilada w/ him... Multiple 4x4's, specially bred hunting dogs, training birds for the dogs, almost every imaginable fire-arm/rifle/shotgun, etc... it's a bit of madness if you ask me!?!

But, based on my close-hand observations, wild-game hunting is a hobby and interest for many just as the NSX and import/sportscars are for us.

In the good old days we use to use a rock or stick to beat them to death with. Less humane but way more sporting!

Emmm ..... you talking about the animals or the hunters? <!--StartFragment -->

i come from a long line of hunters; i used to hunt when i was a kid (not licensed at that time). over time, i became a very active spearfisherman, taking many 50lb+ halibut in nor cal waters. over time, i became less interested in shooting with a spear and returned to shooting with a camera... i find it even more fulfilling, although i've yet to discover the perfect way to prepare and eat a pixel ;)

from my perspective, i understand the many reasons for hunting - food, family tradition, resource management - but for the life of me, think it's plain idiotic that some folks use semi-auto weapons to hunt game. (rant mode off)

hcar, while i'm not in that (pardon the pun) game anymore, you make excellent points, thanks for raising them.

One of my patients holds an IL record for one of the biggest bucks killed bow hunting. He hunts all the time and his 26y/o daughter complains of all the meat that he brings home and his wife complains about all the heads in her house. The thing that made me gain respect is the fact that the guy eats all the meat. The hunt is the sport and he really likes the meat. My step sons dad is very big into hunting and fishing and he only goes after stuff he eats. The true point is that there are hunting liscense for certain animals for a reason. I don't hear anyone complaining about how they heard the cattle and pigs into the slaughter house and just gut em'. It is bad when people hunt for fun, but you would be surprised how many people do it for more then the sport.

An adendum to my earlier post-

Anyone who kills a buck, simply removes the rack as a trophy is welcome to join the fate of their prey.

When I was 13 my extended family had a farm in Indiana. One of the most gut wrenching sites I have ever seen was a pile of buck carcasses left under a bridge along the road that bordered the family property.

My uncle spotted them, and when we went to inspect we found that they had basically been murdered, then disfigured and left to rot.

There is nothing sporting about that- no matter how much skill it took to make the kill shot.

Just wanted to add that- it has been bothering me since my earlier post.

My patient has the entire head and neck mounted. I have seen antlers left over, but the people who showed me the antlers took the meat.

My post wasn't in reference to anything anyone said about their friends and neighbors in this thread.

Trophies are just fine IMO- just not atrocity like what I saw under that bridge.

Just an additional comment for the thread. Sorry if I was unclear.

No problem, I think I was just trying to do the same.
That pic of the deer up the tree is hilarious!

Where I live we are not allowed to use high powered rifles, so we hunt with shotgun slugs. There are a ton of deer here, there are so many of them dead on the freeway I can't imagine if the deer population wasn't thinned out each year. The whole trophy hunting isn't exactly my thing, I think if you are hunting you should use what you kill, venison jerky rules.
