I've been looking for a harness bar that consists of just one bar but haven't had any luck. I recently attended HPDE at Lime Rock Park and needed a way to get some video footage and mounting it to the car somehow. So here is what I did...

I bought a camera mount from B & H Photo Video for around $50.00

Bogen / Manfrotto Super Clamp with 3025 3-Way Head

I took it apart and only used the mount that connects to the video camera... as you can see, I also bought different sized washers and a 10mm bolt from Home Depot.

After taking the top rear cover, I removed one of the 10mm bolts on the firewall and used that location for my camera mount.

I then took the mount, washers and bolt and used the 10mm location on the firewall... adjusted and tighten it...

Here is a pic with the camera and mount directly connected to the firewall... no suction cups and now becomes a part of the car!! Once your finished, you may unbolt it, put back the orginal bolt and cover...

Here is a video of I took using this setup on my first time at Lime Rock Park! :)

That's a good idea for mounting. From the video however, it appears to need to be moved to the right about 4-6 inches.

BTW, nice video.

If you look there are a other 10mm bolts on the firewall that may be used... it may be possible to move the mount to the other locations...

You can easily also get a piece of metal and drill two holes at each end and extend the cam over. the camera takes a standard 1/4 20 thread bolt and you can use a wing nut to fasten the bracket to the mount.

that would work...

Hey someone could even develop some kind of bar that mounts to 2 10mm bolt locations, that way you can slide the camera left and right...

Just some ideas if you don't want a full 4pt bar or have to hack up your interior... :D

Picture's fine but the audio is horrible. Is it wind noise because you're forced to drive with open windows on track on your side of the pond? If so you may use some kind of wind guard (hardware or maybe a special mode in the camera).

Good mounting idea. Can it be used with the interior trim piece in place?

On a side note, how many different driving lines are those guys using?!?

Are you pertaining to the video? If so, this is my first time as well as the others on this run... it was the Novice Session ;)

Yea we where forced to have the windows down in order to be able to put our hands out for signaling... man it was cold in the morning!! But in any case, I was planning on purchasing an external mic.. but the shield sounds good too...

For the wind noise I havent tried this yet because my camcorder dosent have this option but if you have a mic input you can place the mic outside of the car and tape it to the glass hatch and this should work ...I THINK ?.lol

For that I know someone used to put the microphone by the foot well... hehe.. consequently whenever he put his camera in my car I used to play goofy songs while driving :p

BTW... nice video.. good on the pass... i think you need harness to keep yer head still ;)

I'm notorious for doing the same EXACT thing.. If anything it makes it worse though.. equilibrium n all.

Nice video! Interesting rear view mirror. You might want to try some vulcanite or very hard rubber washers on that mount to minimize the camere wobble.
Have fun!

Yeah, I'm looking into a seat/harness/bar for next season... I felt like I was fighting the turns the whole day...

I have used a remote mic taped to the inside of the engine bay. It makes for a better sound track.

Another hint: Look where your microphone(s) are at the camera. If they are on the backside of your adjustable control screen (like the stereo mics on my tiny Sanyo Xacti you see on the right side of the pic) you may turn the screen so that the mic points to the backside (engine bay) of your car. This way you may get less wind noise and more engine sound.

or just mount it on the other side of the firewall glass facing forward! No wind noise, and ALL engine noise. I am going to try this next season.

Little downside of this solution: The camera has to look through 2 windows which may cause some optical problems (Focus, spectral effects)

I wonder how the heat will affect the camera if you do this ?

I was thinking the exact same thing! Please let me know how you go...
