How to support motor when removing 3 motor mounts?

I am changing my clutch and have the transmission out with the car on a short lift. The rear and driver's side engine mounts are removed. I noticed that the front motor mount packing is getting loose and I would like to remove the front motor mount. That would leave only the passenger side motor mount connected.
How can I remove the front motor mount and have the motor supported in place with only the passenger side motor mount connected?

Brian,
Thanks for the advice. It makes sense. I was just hoping that there was a safe way to modify the 3 motor mounts at the same time. I want to give the filler a few days to cure before reinstalling the motor mounts and I was getting impatient.

Hi Steve,

Based on what you say you must still have the front beam installed. First thing is one motor mount will not hold it up. You can place a floor jack under the pan(with a piece of wood, like a short 2 x 4), raise it slightly to get the weight off the mount bolt, then remove the front beam. If you place the jack carefully you can then use a few blocks of wood, maybe a jack stand depending on how high it is, to hold the engine up and remove the front beam and front motor mount.

Once the beam is out of the way, I recommend you leave the engine supported, then install the trans and the drivers side mount. The drive train can be supported with only the driver and passenger engine mounts. Then install the front and rear mounts and front beam. With the front beam out, access the everything, like clutch slave, starter, etc. is easy;).

LarryB,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a 2x4 supporting the oil pan and the passenger side mount and front mounts are connected. I was concerned that if I remove the front mount, that the engine might shift and that I might not be able to get the front mount reinstalled. I filled the 2 other mounts that I removed with a silicone filler and am giving them a few days to cure. After I get the trans back on and the driver's side mount back on. I will remove the front mount and fill it.

PS, the service manual says on page 5-30 to tighten the engine mounting bolts in a specific sequence to avoid "excessive noise and vibration". I don't see that it gives the the sequence.
What sequence should be used to tighten the engine mounting bolts?

Aloha,
Steve

Hi Steven,

For this job I never touch the right, so I install the left bolt, without tightening it, then install the rear, tighten it, then front, tighten it, and install the rear beam. This is all done while under the car. Then I lower the car and finish from above:).

There are some things about the SM that still amaze me:):). This is in line with separating ball joints to remove the trans, NOT!!

Larry thanks!!! If they ever do come up with a replacement for the NSX I'm going to nominate YOU to write the service manual.

Much Aloha,
Steve
