How to check clutch wear?

I've checked clutches this way on many "beater" manual shift cars i've had. It is abusive and you shouldn't do it too often.

1. Put the car in a high gear like 4th or 5th.

2. Rev it up to about 4K

3. Let the clutch out sharply and give it moderate throttle.

With a good clutch, the rpm's should fall quickly even with some throttle. You don't have to let it slip long to "feel" if its good. In fact, its BAD to let it slip long this way.

If the clutch is weak or mis adjusted, the rpm's will not fall quckly and the slip will be more pronounced.

If the clutch is shot, the engine will easily overcome the clutch and the revs will easily increase with throttle. At this stage, the clutch is pretty much done..

Thats my method. It has worked well for me, but it is abusive to the clutch if you do it too often or too long. Do NOT let it slip long enough to produce smell or smoke.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

When I got my NSX back in '97 with 10K on the clock, I got in touch with a good friend of mine and the subject of my clutch came up. He wanted to test it since he was just as much into cars as I am. He took the car to redline in 1st gear and quickly shifted to 2nd and sidestepped the clutch. Our backs were slammed into the seats when it engaged. He told me that the clutch is excellent and showed no hint of slippage. I've never attempted to do this test on my car again and feel no need to since I don't feel any slippage to date.

I now have 43K miles on the car and after 12 open track events at Laguna Seca (matching revs + heel & toe) the clutch still doesn't slip.

I just noticed mine slipping driving around town. If I'm going 30mph and put it in 3rd and floor it the tach just screams and I'm going no where looks like the old clutch is on the way out. The other time I noticed it was I was on it hard redline at 3rd as soon as I put it in 4th the old tach went soaring.

I checked mine like it indicated in the faq.I found a slight incline hit second revved up to about 4k with moderate throttle and just did a real quick jab on the clutch all the way to the floor and off it as fast as I could.I felt it grab hard and jolt me.if you dont get that grab and go jolt its slipping.mine was fine and like the other guys methods I would not do it very often.
