How many of you have Harness Bars and Belts?

I was wondering whether you use OEM seat belt or have some sort of harness/belts (4- or 5- points)? I know that several of you use stock seats with harnesses (John, Bob, Peter, and etc.).

I would just like to have some consensus on this, and figure out whether I want to keep using my stock seat belt, or go for stock seat/harness bars/harnesses/ or fixed back seat/harnesses (I find myself moving around too much, and after each track day, I feel as if I have done some intense workout).

Thank you.

Don't look for consensus, because some of us have harnesses and harness bars installed, and others (including myself) still have the stock belts. I would suggest that if you find yourself moving around too much, and you would like to be fastened it more securely, then consider getting a harness setup.

Note, too, that you can try cinching your belts as a free alternative. At the start of each session, slide the seat bottom full backwards, jerk on the shoulder harness portion of the seat belt until it catches, keep it firmly taut, and slide the seat bottom forward. It should stay very tight for the duration of the session.

EDIT: Corrected seat sliding directions.

Don't you mean slide the seat backwards, lock the belt, then slide it forwards?

That's what I do, and it does help a lot, but I would like to get a 4 or 5 way harness.

Anyone have any suggestions for a harness / bar setup that is not excessively difficult to install?

Jeff

I use a sparco seat and a custom made harness bar and sabelt harness.

I made the mistake of getting 4 point harnesses - the problem with these is that without a crotch belt to hold the lap belts down, when you tighten the shoulder belts to hold you in tight the lap belts and buckle simply ride up and end up uncomfortably across your belly - apart from being not ideal this is also very dangerous in the event of a crash in terms of injury.

I have now resolved this by getting the crotch straps now, but if you are looking to buy a harness go for the 5 or 6 point rather than the 4

hope that helps

Thank you. How do you like your Sparco Evo seats for a long distance trip and everyday driving? Did you retain your stock seatbelts, and use them for daily driving?

I am working with MJ at Dali to bring back the 'no-cut' harness bar he used to have made, definately want to build cro-moly bars and am going to build a proto-type titanium bar to see how much lighter I can make it with out sacrificing strength. Oh yah, little 'blig' value too , titanium is just such cool shit!

Hopefully this fall/winter we will be up and running and this will once again be an option for NSX'ers.

I find them fine for everyday and distance driving, but I would advise that anyone larger than me might find otherwise! (I am 5' 10" and 230lb)

I removed the stock seatbelt sockets when I mounted the seats, I have yet to remove the actual seatbelts themseves but I don't (can't!) use them.

If I used the car more for daily driving than I do then I would keep and use the stock belts.

Tiger,

You have seen my setup with both the 5 point for track usage and the OEM belts retained for the street. I highly recommend using at least a 5 point harness system for the amount of track usage you are doing. At a minimum, you will be keeping your instructor both safe and happy that there are harnesses installed. We just came back from the Glen where a newbie NSXer crashed in the esses and his instructor indicated afterwards that he was concerned during the incident because, among other obvious things, he realized he was spinning backwards at 100mph toward the armco with only street belts in the car. I would err on the side of caution and safety and go for at least the 5 point install.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. The only reason that I wanted to go for 4-point was because a representative from Schroth mentioned that 4-point harnesses are safe as 5-point harnesses. I will consider this more seriously.

Thank you.

At the Novice level(where I am), I find that the CG lock and Stock belts work extremely well. My Left knee moves a bit but otherwise, but shoulder and butt is "locked in". I am still not driving at a level where I feel that the Harness bar/belts and race car seat is necessary.

CG Lock- see thread below
