How long do airbags last for?

Based on a comment NSXTACY posted a while back, he mentioned that we (91-92 owners) need to have our SRS sytem checked by the dealer to make sure all is okay.

My question is, since my car is now 12ish years old, is my airbag still good? Has there been any studies completed on the durability of 10+ year old airbags. Wondering because those aftermarket steering wheels are looking tempting, and if my airbag is determined shot by reason of age, that is one more reason to upgrade to a non-airbag wheel.

Air bags save lives.

Air bags last indefinitely. If they wouldn't last for 20 years, the recommendation would be to replace the air bag after 10 years, rather than inspecting it.
