I'm looking into getting a 91-95 nsx.
If everything had bare minimal mods or even stock.. and tooken care of. How long do you think the motor can last?

I have a local guy here selling his 91 with 100k miles but has a rebuilt with about 50k. and i have another out of state nsx deal, 95 stock 39k orig miles.

just wondering what your inputs would be

With proper maintenance NSX engines run forever, there are no stock engines that have warn out with even upwards of 300,000 mi. That being said one overheat from a blown coolant hose, one loss of oil pressure from a botched jiffy lube oil change or a missed shift into 2nd at over 100MPH and you are looking at a big repair bill.

I can tell you mine has 170,000 + miles on it and it is perfect, No leaks, no burn, no smoke nothing its just as smooth as some of the ones I drove with 50k. They are amazing engines as long as they are taken care of.

so should i ask the owner why that engine was rebuilt?

Did he write "tooken"?

Same question I had before I bought mine...
AFAIK theres still no engine out there which died due to dotage.
Maybe it'll last a million. I guess nobody really can tell you this.
Up to now, over 300k, here and there, is proven.

rebuilt by Mark Basch, for spun rod bearing. Total price for rebuild ~$8K

i dont know much about "mechanics" for nsx. can anyone knowledge me on Mark Basch

Well since everyone is saying the stock engine will last more then 300,000 miles..How long will it last if u add Turbo to it?

Just curious

Simply put, He is a well known NSX specialist that is frequently mentioned here on Prime.

My car has 131k miles and had the engine rebuilt by 1st Class Automotive, which is one of the best NSX specialists in Florida, due to a synchro going bad and causing a shift from 2nd to 1st instead of the intended 3rd. This resulted in valve damage, which required the engine to be taken apart for replacement. I went ahead and had the top half of the engine rebuilt with Port & Polish, upgraded valve and spring retainers courtesy of Science Of Speed, and a couple other goodies.

I can't say my engine has been bullet proof. I've had a minor oil leak. Hmm, actually.....that's the only problem I've ever had, a oil leak and that's it. I guess that's pretty damned good.

I would also consider checking the A/C system. That's the one thing that gave me the most trouble. I've had to replace the evaporater/condenser, blower, fuse, and get my climate control repaired Courtesy of BrianK http://nsxe-repair.com/

I'd say compared to most any exotic, the NSX is pretty bullet proof. Repairs are pricey compared to any car you would get in the price range of an older NSX. So consider this as well.

I had the same question when buying my NSX. I put 100,000 miles on my old Type-R and had a compression check run before I sold it, and it was still well within spec. So I figured if my abused, tracked Type-R could make it to 100,000, a well taken care of, previously owned by a Doctor, NSX should easily be able to make it 150,000. I bought it with 45,000 miles on it. I plan on putting 100,000 on it. If I need engine work at that point, I won't be upset. If I don't, which I probably won't, then gravy.

As far as which to pick, note things like if they have the timing belt and water pump replaced. Both of the ones you mentioned should have had it already done, and it's not cheap. I would wonder about the clutch on the higher mileage one. I would wonder about shocks too on both.
As far as the rebuilt engine one, personally I would shy away from it. I'm a big fan of keeping the engine sealed as long as possible.

Good luck.

This may be off topic a bit, but is there a way you can tell if an engine has been rebuilt? If you're buying an vehicle with a few previous owners those history may be lost during the transaction. So how can people tell if an engine has been rebuilt?
